Now you know how we feel [Outro: Jay Z & Rihanna] Whassup! Yeah, yeah, whassup! We gon' run this town tonight About “Run This Town” The three principal artists of Jay-Z’s newly-formed Roc Nation record label—Kanye West, Rihanna, and the Hov himself—announce to the world that they “run the town. ” Jay explained the clear nature of the track in an interview with Tim Westwood, saying: We basically run this town. It’s myself, Rihanna and Kanye. [That’s] pretty much it. The song made its radio debut on July 24, 2009 at 9:11am to coincide with the album’s planned release date of September 11, 2009. Rihanna’s contribution was her first musical appearance following a domestic violence altercation with her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown earlier that year. “Run This Town” was a highly successful single for Hov, peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the charts in the United Kingdom. Officially it has been certified 2x Platinum by the RIAA, with Billboard estimating sales of 3, 490, 000. RTT won two Grammy Awards in 2010, for “Best Rap/Sung Collaboration” and “Best Rap Song. ” The video game Battlefield 4 used the track as its theme song in 2013. What has Jay-Z said about the track? The Def Jam contract had run its course —ending in a great way, which never happens—and this felt like the right message to send on The Blueprint 3. The song is about the formation of Roc Nation —planting our flag in the ground. Me, aligned with the two greatest artists that I’ve found—Kanye West and Rihanna. The growth of us. It was originally a Rihanna demo but I took it in another direction. I wanted the whole song to feel like a march, a battle cry. Muhammad Ali had the shortest poem ever: ‘Me: We! ’ My statement was ‘We Are! ’ Maybe you didn’t hear me? We Are. Yeah I said it. We Are. How did Kanye feel about the track's place as a single? At a Watch the Throne listening session in 2011 Jay explained how Kanye had originally argued against releasing “Run This Town” as a Blueprint 3 single, when he became convinced that the song wasn’t a hit after watching the reaction to the record at a barbecue hosted by the Heavy Hitters. What has No I. D. said about the song? That was initially a Rihanna record. She came down to Hawaii and we did it. We did a few records for her—and two of them became ‘Run This Town’ and Drake’s ‘Find Your Love. ’ She came down and cut the record and then she passed on it. We were all like ‘What? You’re passing? ’ Jay heard it and said ‘This is my record now. ’ Then Kanye heard it and said ‘Nah, don’t give Jay that record—that’s my record. ’ [Laughs] Then Jay hits me and says, ‘Don’t let Kanye get that record. ’ So Jay got it, and Kanye ended up doing a verse. It was a memorable moment. We won a Grammy, but when you have those three on a record, you’re supposed to win a Grammy. That was a monster that didn’t sound like a commercial record. It was a pure hip-hop beat, and darker than a traditional pop record. via Complex. "Run This Town" Track Info Recorded At Roc The Mic Studios (New York City, New York); Westlake Recording Studios (Los Angeles, California); Avex Honolulu Studios (Honolulu, Hawaii) Release Date September 8, 2009.

"Doesn't that cost a lot more? " "You can afford it, " Jungkook tells him. It's true, Yoongi can. But it's the principle; the feeling of being taken for a fool, who'll pay anything just because he can. He's about to argue his point before Jungkook adds- "Anyway, this one's for free. " [alternatively: Yoonkook fuck in a strip club] Series Part 1 of Run This Town Language: English 10, 270 Chapters: 1/1 Kudos: 3635 736 Hits: 84654 Yoongi's on a business trip in Shanghai, and Jungkook's bored. [alternatively: Yoonkook have phone sex] Part 2 of Run This Town 7, 046 2257 146 42165 “So, how did you two meet? ” Seokjin asks curiously. Yoongi knew it would come up. Why he listened to Jungkook is beyond him. Yoongi’s mind searches for a believable story, but Jungkook jumps in first. “We met in the club. ” Yoongi’s going to fucking kill him. [alternatively: Yoonkook get invited to Seokjin's place, and get it on in the bathroom] Part 3 of Run This Town 8, 795 2060 133 39070 It's nice, the easy banter. It feels a world away from the staid and impersonal conversations at work. From the awkward, stilted conversations with his parents. It's relaxed; enjoyable. "Don't be stubborn, " Jungkook huffs playfully. "You know you wanna spoil me. " Yoongi sips on his drink, licks his lips lightly. "If that's what you want, we can go to your bedroom right now. I'll spoil you all night long. " [alternatively: Yoongi has breakfast at the Kims, coffee with his parents, and a memorable dinner with Jungkook] Part 4 of Run This Town 9, 563 2001 113 37153 Jungkook has a surprise for Yoongi, and Yoongi finds himself becoming more involved in Jungkook's world. It has become an odd comfort, knowing that Jungkook's nearby. But tonight it's silent. Maybe Jungkook's not even home. For a few hazy moments, caught between wake and sleep, washed with loneliness, Yoongi realises that he misses falling asleep with Jungkook beside him. [alternatively: Yoonkook have fun the morning after Jin's party, and Yoongi comes to some realisations] Part 6 of Run This Town 7, 747 1929 100 30805 “You seem different with him. ” Yoongi arches his eyebrow. Exhales more smoke, slowly letting it escape from his lips. “Different? ” Taehyung shrugs. “I don’t know. Like, relaxed or something. ” He wets his lips, looks down at the ground. “Happy, I guess. ” [alternatively: Yoongi gets an invite to Taehyung's holiday dinner and Yoonkook fuck in a car] Part 7 of Run This Town 10, 311 2147 110 34909 “Wow. You really like me in this stuff, huh? ” “I like you in anything, ” Yoongi tells him. It’s only seconds later he realises quite how that sounded. He doesn’t say anything else, but when he looks back at Jungkook there’s a flush in the younger's cheeks that Yoongi’s sure isn’t from the heat. [alternatively: Yoongi goes home for Christmas, and Yoonkook fuck in an actual bed for once] Part 8 of Run This Town 11, 606 2098 105 35416 "Thanks for coming here. " “Thanks for the invite, ” Yoongi replies. He takes one last drag, letting the smoke escape lazily through his parted lips. He then stubs out his cigarette in the elegant ashtray. Tightens the arm around Jungkook’s waist. “If I don't have the best fucking New Year's Eve ever tomorrow I'm suing. ” Jungkook lifts his gaze to meet Yoongi’s. The corners of his lips twitch towards a smile. "It won't be hard to beat sitting on your own, bitching about me and filing noise complaints. ” "We'll see. " [alternatively: Yoonkook have fun in Bangkok] Part 9 of Run This Town 15, 413 1718 78 31635 Yoongi sits on the floor of his lounge that night, staring blankly out of the tall window. The city shimmers in front of him, vast and sprawling. Yoongi knows it well. Has learnt its hidden places. Knows the spots where shady deals are made, where barely legal contracts are signed off. He knows who are the players, and who are the pawns. Up until yesterday, he felt like he knew exactly where he fit in it all. Now, he only feels lost. [alternatively: Yoongi makes a choice] Part 10 of Run This Town 12, 456 1843 87 28521 “We’ll get through this, alright? ” Jungkook tells him. "Don't worry. " He leans in, pressing his lips gently to Yoongi’s jaw. His hand lifts up, palm cupping Yoongi’s opposite cheek. Another stray kiss finds its way to Yoongi’s jaw, then to the corner of his mouth. It feels strange to have Jungkook fuss over him like this but for the moment Yoongi lets him. It’s comforting to know that the younger is there for him. Comforting to hear the 'we' in his sentence. [alternatively: Yoonkook fuck away their worries, and Jaesung finds a new way to anger Yoongi] Part 11 of Run This Town 13, 252 1666 79 31744 “Min? Did you hear what I said? ” Jaesung’s voice rasps down the phone. Panicked, strained. His words repeat in Yoongi’s mind. He already knows. Fear grips him. Jaesung’s voice is too loud, too persistent. Yoongi takes the phone away from his ear and hangs up. Turns it onto silent. He throws the phone down onto his desk as though scalded by it. Truly he feels like he has been burnt. Jaesung’s admittance seared onto him, leaving him unable to escape its truth. It didn’t work. Seokjin tried but- it didn’t work. [alternatively: Yoongi deals with the fallout from Jaesung's actions] Part 12 of Run This Town 8, 814 1813 65 22986 “Already sucking up to the boss, huh? ” Jungkook grins wider. Ducks his head and lands a stray kiss on Yoongi’s shoulder. He gives him a look, far softer, before laying back down. Head on Yoongi’s chest, body pressed into his side. “He’s not my boss yet, ” Yoongi reminds him. “Bet you by tomorrow night he will be. ” [alternatively: Yoongi's life starts down a new path] Part 13 of Run This Town 11, 822 1717 70 28909 Yoongi can’t believe how lucky he is to be able keep so much of his old life. His money, his lifestyle, all the material wealth he’s constantly surrounded himself with. All the tangible ways to prove how far he’s come in life. Right now however, none of it means quite as much as the man beside him. The person who has helped to put the pieces of his life back together after Jeon brought it crashing down. Deep down Yoongi thinks he's known it for a while; but in that moment, it truly sinks in that Jungkook has become the most important piece of all. [alternatively: Yoonkook get an unexpected visitor, and it's Yoongi's first day in his job] Part 14 of Run This Town 9, 180 1727 51 25027 “I’m happy for you, ” Taehyung finally offers, sounding genuine. “You two seem really happy together. ” He gives them a small smile. Not bright and beaming, but still meaningful. Yoongi feels hot in the cheeks, the sincere way in which Taehyung says these things catching him off guard. Jungkook shifts next to him. Yoongi imagines he’s stuck for words too. Yoongi surprises even himself when he hears his own voice replying. “Yeah. We are. ” [alternatively: Yoonkook watch Jimin dance, and Seokjin makes it clear how important loyalty is] Part 15 of Run This Town 8, 510 1619 52 24845 The drive back is uncomfortably silent. Seokjin seems to understand that Yoongi doesn’t want to talk. Yoongi notices the small glances that keep getting thrown his way. He doesn't return them. It’s not until they’re amongst the bright lights of Seoul once more, seeming a world away from those desolate warehouses, that Seokjin finally speaks. “Have you ever seen anyone die before, Yoongi? ” Yoongi’s a little taken aback by the direct question. By the odd note of confusion laced in there. He answers nonetheless. “Not like that. ” [alternatively: Yoonkook deal with what's happened] Part 16 of Run This Town 7, 058 1720 58 21601 Yoongi feels a closeness to the younger, intense enough to catch him off guard. Closeness not just in proximity, but in something far deeper too. Something that makes Yoongi feel completely wrapped up in him. Like the rest of the club seems to disappear, everything focusing down to just him and Jungkook. [alternatively: Yoonkook attend Hoseok's birthday and get a little frisky] Part 17 of Run This Town 15, 036 1581 50 25348 “Why are you doing this for Jin? ” Jungkook asks, quiet, caught somewhere between anger and acceptance. “Because he says he didn’t do it, whatever it is, and I believe him. ” Jungkook doesn’t say anything, clearly not impressed with Yoongi’s answer. Yoongi sighs. “Because he means a lot to you, ” he says, more honestly. Jungkook tenses in Yoongi’s hold. “If you’re just doing this for me, then-“ Jungkook’s protest gets cut off when Yoongi speaks once more. “And because he’s my friend. ” [alternatively: Yoongi helps out Seokjin and has an unexpected lunch with Taehyung] Part 18 of Run This Town 8, 944 1524 21470 “I won’t let him down, ” Yoongi replies. Mr Kim watches him, nodding slowly. “Somehow, I believe you. ” [alternatively: Yoongi meets Seokjin's father, and Jungkook gets an unpleasant surprise] Part 19 of Run This Town 9, 532 1714 55 21992 Namjoon shrugs, as though it’s not important. His smile turns softer, though there’s something sad still pulling at the edges. “Jin and Kook, they can’t help the world they were born into, ” Namjoon continues, voice quiet. “And we can’t help that we fell in love with them. All we can do is support each other. ” [alternatively: Yoongi learns a new skill, and celebrates his birthday] Part 20 of Run This Town 14, 219 1613 60 25082 “Jungkook is an amazing person, ” Yoongi tells her. “I wish you could see that. ” “I’m sure he is, ” she says softly. “But I can’t lie. He’s not the person I want for you. ” [alternatively: Jungkook apologises to Jin, and Yoongi has a surprise visit] Part 21 of Run This Town 8, 077 1591 49 18792 Yoongi can't shake that small, niggling fear that comes with moving in with Jungkook. He supposes it must be natural, for someone so used to their independence. Yoongi knows that it could feel like a backwards move. But he knows, too, that it truly isn't. This apartment was a tangible way of showing how far he'd come in life; same as his car, his expensive possessions. Being with Jungkook, however, he's come so far in a very different way. Like there's new meaning to everything that surrounds him. [alternatively: yoonkook are terrible at packing, and Yoongi misses his meeting with Seokjin] Part 22 of Run This Town 11, 083 1480 56 21402 In which everyone comes to terms with what has happened. Now charged with the hospice care of Amanda, a retired dancer ravaged by cancer, Maud's fervent faith quickly inspires an obsessive conviction that she must save her ward's soul from eternal damnation - whatever the cost. Making her feature film debut, writer-director Rose Glass cannily lures the audience into this disturbed psyche, steadily setting up her veritable diary of a country nurse for an unnerving and ultimately shocking trajectory. Morfydd Clark (also at the Festival in The Personal History of David Copperfield) portrays the sanctimonious Maud with an intense stoicism that belies a disquieting vulnerability, as Maud desperately vies for absolution and solidarity from her embittered patient (an enthralling Jennifer Ehle, also at the Festival in Beneath the Blue Suburban Skies). I knew it has to do with Killing Eve when I heard the first song. Watch Full Saint maud newton. Meet Maud, a spooky private-care nurse who’s a little … horny for Christ! In Saint Maud, the newest horror offering from A24, writer-director Rose Glass presents a movie about an in-home nurse (Morfydd Clark) who’s just trying to pray, do good, and save the soul of her mischievous ward (Jennifer Ehle). (And that’s before a Billie Eilish song plays! ) Per the movie’s log line: “Saint Maud is a chilling and boldly original vision of faith, madness, and salvation in a fallen world. Maud, a newly devout hospice nurse, becomes obsessed with saving her dying patient’s soul — but sinister forces, and her own sinful past, threaten to put an end to her holy calling. ” Saint Maud premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. See it in theaters March 27, 2020. Saint Maud Trailer: All the Good Nurses Go to Hell.

A24 A24  is adding to its impressive catalog of horror titles with its unsettling new film,  Saint Maud. As with Midsommar, The Witch  and Hereditary before it, Saint Maud  looks like another winning film that strikes a balance between cinematic beauty and genuinely terrifying storytelling. The film follows Maud, a strangely devout hospice nurse who becomes fixated on saving her dying patient’s soul. What begins as a domestic drama shifts into a disturbing, psychological thriller with a sadomasochistic undercurrent, before culminating in what looks like a full-blown exorcism. A24 is steadily carving out an entirely distinct space within the horror genre. And in  Saint Maud,  writer-director Rose Glass seems to draw on the most frightening elements of titles like  Carrie, and The Exorcist, whilst also doing some altogether new and scary. Watch the trailer below. Saint Maud  opens March 27, 2020 Isabelle is an Australian writer based in Berlin. What To Read Next.

Just to clarify, cause that within itself shows that the Judeo-Christian Adonai/YHWH is nothing else than an exported/distorted pagan god. Patterns of evidence: the red sea miracle full. Ron Wyatt and his discoveries was an answer to prayer for me back in 2010. I asked God to give me a bible study because I was stuck with nothing to study. It all started with his Noahs ark video on a google search and then all of the others. I cried when I got to the Ark of the Covenant knowing I found real truth. and I have not changed my mind since and never will. Thank you Mary Nell! This was a great video. Why not hunt for the prodigal son? The story of Noah or the Sumerian original, or the Hindu original, are all based on a allegory and is about something more meaningful than an improbable boat and a family with livestock.

What is a wilderness advocate. I n 2015, during an escalation of violence in Jerusalem, a just-turned-teenage Palestinian boy and his older cousin were involved in a stabbing that left two young Israelis injured – critically in the case of one, a 13-year-old boy. The elder cousin, Hassan, was shot dead by police. The younger, Ahmad, was hit by a car and lay bleeding on the ground as a crowd gathered. They shouted: “Die you motherfucker” and urged police to “put a bullet in his head”. The shockingly young ages of the boys sent the story around the world. For Israeli lawyer Lea Tsemel, who defends Palestinians, it led to one of the most fraught conflicts of her decades-long career. Advocate, an award-winning documentary by Israeli film-makers Rachel Leah Jones and Philippe Bellaiche, chronicles the 75-year-old lawyers life and work. The film provides a compelling insight into the uneasy complexities of representing Palestinians in Israeli courts, where the occupiers effectively judge the occupied in a system that cant escape the bloody conflict raging between the two sides. Early in the film, as the camera sweeps along the rows of battered files that crowd Tsemels office, we see the nature of her work spelled out in their headings: possession of a weapon, stone throwing, accessory to murder, suicide bombings. Its a life spent losing inside courtrooms and facing attacks outside them. Watch a trailer for Advocate The film contains footage of a TV interview with Tsemel in the 1990s, in which she discusses what drives her to defend Palestinians. The presenter says to her: “Its as if you identify with them! ” They also tally all the verbal attacks the lawyer has faced: traitor, leftist, devils advocate. At one point the presenter says: “I think that terrorists are no different to rapists and murderers. ” Tsemel replies that, instead of “terrorists”, other people in the world might call some Palestinians “freedom fighters”. To protect the identity of defendants, the film sometimes uses animated images projected on to legal and press archives – the background documents reminding us that this story cannot be separated from a historical and political context. In one animated sequence, Ahmad passes round a packet of sweets outside the courtroom at his fathers request. His teenage awkwardness seems familiar and at the same time completely at odds with his involvement in the conflict. Tried … 13-year-old Ahmad Manasrah in hospital following the 2015 incident featured in the film. Photograph: Handout/Getty Images Although the film is interspersed with footage spanning Tsemels legal career, Advocate focuses on two defendants: Ahmad, and a Palestinian woman called Israa Jaabis who injured a policeman and severely burned herself after setting fire to her car, which was loaded with gas canisters. Israeli officials deemed this a botched suicide bombing. Given the womans previous attempts to take her own life, Tsemel wonders at one point if the intent was “suicide by cop”. Adding to the tensions throughout this well-paced documentary is the media spotlight on both cases, Ahmads in particular. We see his case deployed in a battle over political narratives between Israeli and Palestinian leaderships, as well as the sometimes sensationalist interpretations ascribed by the journalists covering it. Tsemel comes out of grim hearings to give polished media interviews and explain the moral and legal ramifications. Born in 1945 to parents from Belarus and Poland, Tsemel was studying law in Jerusalem in 1967, when the six-day war concluded with Israel capturing the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, among other territories. Soon after, she saw lines of fleeing Palestinians and felt the parallels with Jewish exile and her own familys history. As she explains in the film, she was reluctantly drawn to left-wing politics, which for her answered the questions demanded by the unfolding situation. ‘Someone has to make a film about her … the documentary team of Bellaiche and Jones filming Tsemel. Photograph: Home Made Docs Although she has known Tsemel for decades, it didnt occur to Jones to make a film about her. “Often we overlook the things closest to us, ” she says of Advocate, her fourth documentary. It was co-director Bellaiche who first envisaged it. “The day he met Tsemel, he said, ‘Someone has to make a film about her. I said, ‘Someone will. Fifteen years later, we looked at each other and realised, ‘Well, that someone is us. ” Advocate has bagged several awards and was shortlisted – though not nominated – for this years Oscars. In 2019, the film infuriated Israels right-wing Im Tirtzu organisation, as well as a group representing Israelis who have lost family members in terror attacks, after it won the countrys prestigious DocAviv award. Culture minister Miri Regev slammed this decision, calling Advocates presentation of Tsemels work “outrageous and deserving of condemnation”. Regev pushed to cancel screenings and said the national lottery, which funds the award, should withdraw its prize money. But Israels arts community pushed back, staging demonstrations, pulling out of awards and returning other prizes in protest. “The national lottery belongs to everyone, ” says Amit Goren, CEO of the Makor Foundation for Israeli films. Regev has also attacked the award-winning Israeli film Foxtrot for its depiction of Israeli soldiers and proposed a “loyalty in culture” bill for arts funding (which was later postponed. Pointing to Makors pluralistic mission for films across the political spectrum, Goren says: “We are in an absurd situation. A politician who is supposed to represent all of us is representing a very narrow political vision. ” Advocate has enjoyed extended runs to sell-out audiences in Israel, perhaps suggesting the film gives voice to a growing desire among liberals to reclaim some political space. “Lea touched that nerve, she made it possible. It was fantastic and I would never have foreseen that, ” says Jones, whom I have known for over a decade, having first met to discuss one of her earlier films, Ashkenaz, which explored notions of identity in Israel. ‘Im willing to pay the price … Tsemel with her daughter Talila Warschawski. Photograph: Aaron Richter/Getty Images Tsemel tells me that, despite the attacks on social media, she is greeted positively on Jerusalems streets. “Just the other day, a young guy shouted in the market, ‘Lea, you are my Oscar! People who dont think like me, who cant stand my ideology, tell me to carry on. ” The films spotlight on a fight for progressive values seems welcome at a time of populist right resurgence around the world. “What Lea represents hits home, ” says Jones. “The question is: who is ready to go against the grain, swim against the current and speak truth to power? ” Although focused on court verdicts, Advocate offers no definitive judgments, least of all on Tsemel. This tireless lawyer is portrayed as principled but demanding, sparkling but also snappish. The cost of a career so at odds with mainstream Israeli society is sensitively navigated in interviews with Tsemels husband, the leftist activist Michel Warschawski, and their two children, neither of whom pretends that the pride they feel today was easily reached. “Its rare to see women like her, who do their thing unapologetically, ” says her daughter, Talila. “Im willing to pay the price for there to be room for a woman like that to exist. ” One archival scene shows Tsemel celebrating a rare victory in an appeal to the supreme court in 1999, making it illegal for Israels security services to use torture during interrogations. Interviewed in the film, Avigdor Feldman, one of the team of winning lawyers, now says that the landmark ruling has been eroded. What, he is asked, is justice? “I dont know, since I dont believe in justice, ” he replies, explaining that because in trials involving Palestinians, “the balance of power is a priori unequal, a fair chance is never given”. Tsemel still believes in it, he adds, which is how she can keep fighting for her clients. Offering hope … Tsemel in 2019. Photograph: Film Movement/Everett Collection Inc/Alamy Shortly after Advocates world premiere last year, her Palestinian co-council Tareq Barghout, who features in the film, was arrested over involvement in shooting attacks in the West Bank. She represented Barghout, who was sentenced to 13 years. It is a coda to a bleak story with no winners, yet audiences have found hope in Tsemel, who calls herself an “angry optimistic woman” in the film. Success, she says, is not always defined in terms of wins and losses but rather in the spaces in between: the capacity to reduce a sentence, stop a deportation, prevent a family separation. “The important thing is not to despair of losing so often, but to try and try again, ” she says. Repeated defeat doesnt seem to dent her resilience. “On the contrary, it gives me more ambition – this time, Im going to do it. ” • Advocate: A Lawyer Without Borders will be shown on BBC Four on 10 February at 9pm.

Empress, the female equivalent, may indicate an emperor's wife ( empress consort) mother ( empress dowager) or a woman who rules in her own right ( empress regnant. Emperors are generally recognized to be of a higher honour and rank than kings. In Europe, the title of Emperor has been used since the Middle Ages, considered in those times equal or almost equal in dignity to that of Pope due to the latter's position as visible head of the Church and spiritual leader of the Catholic part of Western Europe. The Emperor of Japan is the only currently reigning monarch whose title is translated into English as "Emperor. 2] Both emperors and kings are monarchs, but emperor and empress are considered the higher monarchical titles. Inasmuch as there is a strict definition of emperor, it is that an emperor has no relations implying the superiority of any other ruler and typically rules over more than one nation. Therefore a king might be obliged to pay tribute to another ruler, 3] or be restrained in his actions in some unequal fashion, but an emperor should in theory be completely free of such restraints. However, monarchs heading empires have not always used the title in all contexts—the British sovereign did not assume the title Empress of the British Empire even during the incorporation of India, though she was declared Empress of India. In Western Europe, the title of Emperor was used exclusively by the Holy Roman Emperor, whose imperial authority was derived from the concept of translatio imperii, i. e. they claimed succession to the authority of the Western Roman Emperors, thus linking themselves to Roman institutions and traditions as part of state ideology. Although initially ruling much of Central Europe and northern Italy, by the 19th century the Emperor exercised little power beyond the German-speaking states. Although technically an elective title, by the late 16th century the imperial title had in practice come to be inherited by the Habsburg Archdukes of Austria and following the Thirty Years' War their control over the states (outside the Habsburg Monarchy, i. Austria, Bohemia and various territories outside the empire) had become nearly non-existent. However, Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned Emperor of the French in 1804 and was shortly followed by Francis II, Holy Roman Emperor, who declared himself Emperor of Austria in the same year. The position of Holy Roman Emperor nonetheless continued until Francis II abdicated that position in 1806. In Eastern Europe, the monarchs of Russia also used translatio imperii to wield imperial authority as successors to the Eastern Roman Empire. Their status was officially recognised by the Holy Roman Emperor in 1514, although not officially used by the Russian monarchs until 1547. However, the Russian emperors are better known by their Russian-language title of Tsar even after Peter the Great adopted the title of Emperor of All Russia in 1721. Historians have liberally used emperor and empire anachronistically and out of its Roman and European context to describe any large state from the past or the present. Such pre-Roman titles as Great King or King of Kings, used by the Kings of Persia and others, are often considered as the equivalent. Sometimes this reference has even extended to non-monarchically ruled states and their spheres of influence such as the Athenian Empire of the late 5th century BC, the Angevin Empire of the Plantagenets and the Soviet and American "empires" of the Cold War era. However, such "empires" did not need to be headed by an "emperor. Empire became identified instead with vast territorial holdings rather than the title of its ruler by the mid-18th century. For purposes of protocol, emperors were once given precedence over kings in international diplomatic relations, but currently precedence amongst heads of state who are sovereigns—whether they be kings, queens, emperors, empresses, princes, princesses and to a lesser degree presidents—is determined by the duration of time that each one has been continuously in office. Outside the European context, emperor was the translation given to holders of titles who were accorded the same precedence as European emperors in diplomatic terms. In reciprocity, these rulers might accredit equal titles in their native languages to their European peers. Through centuries of international convention, this has become the dominant rule to identifying an emperor in the modern era. Roman tradition [ edit] In the Roman tradition a large variety in the meaning and importance of the imperial form of monarchy developed: in intention it was always the highest office, but it could as well fall down to a redundant title for nobility that had never been near to the "Empire" they were supposed to be reigning. Also the name of the position split in several branches of Western tradition, see below. The importance and meaning of coronation ceremonies and regalia also varied within the tradition: for instance Holy Roman Emperors could only be crowned emperor by the Pope, which meant the coronation ceremony usually took place in Rome, often several years after these emperors had ascended to the throne (as "king" in their home country. The first Latin Emperors of Constantinople on the other hand had to be present in the newly conquered capital of their empire, because that was the only place where they could be granted to become emperor. Early Roman Emperors avoided any type of ceremony or regalia different from what was already usual for republican offices in the Roman Republic: the most intrusive change had been changing the color of their robe to purple. Later new symbols of worldly and/or spiritual power, like the orb, became an essential part of the imperial accessories. Rules for indicating successors also varied: there was a tendency towards male inheritance of the supreme office, but as well election by noblemen, as ruling empresses are known (for empires not too strictly under salic law. Ruling monarchs could additionally steer the succession by adoption, as often occurred in the two first centuries of Imperial Rome. Of course, intrigue, murder and military force could also mingle in for appointing successors; the Roman imperial tradition made no exception to other monarchical traditions in this respect. Probably the epoch best known for this part of the imperial tradition is Rome's third century rule. Roman Empire and Byzantine emperors [ edit] Classical Antiquity [ edit] When Republican Rome turned into a de facto monarchy in the second half of the 1st century BC, at first there was no name for the title of the new type of monarch. Ancient Romans abhorred the name Rex ( king. and it was critical to the political order to maintain the forms and pretenses of republican rule. Julius Caesar had been Dictator, an acknowledged and traditional office in Republican Rome. Caesar was not the first to hold it, but following his assassination the term was abhorred in Rome [ citation needed. Augustus, the first emperor of the Roman Empire. Augustus, considered the first Roman emperor, established his hegemony by collecting on himself offices, titles, and honours of Republican Rome that had traditionally been distributed to different people, concentrating what had been distributed power in one man. One of these offices was princeps senatus. first man of the Senate" and became changed into Augustus' chief honorific, princeps civitatis ( first citizen" from which the modern English word and title prince is descended. The first period of the Roman Empire, from 27 BC – AD 284, is called the principate for this reason. However, it was the informal descriptive of Imperator ( commander" that became the title increasingly favored by his successors. Previously bestowed on high officials and military commanders who had imperium, Augustus reserved it exclusively to himself as the ultimate holder of all imperium. Imperium is Latin for the authority to command, one of a various types of authority delineated in Roman political thought. ) Beginning with Augustus, Imperator appeared in the title of all Roman monarchs through the extinction of the Empire in 1453. After the reign of Augustus' immediate successor Tiberius, being proclaimed imperator was transformed into the act of accession to the head of state. Other honorifics used by the Roman Emperors have also come to be synonyms for Emperor: Caesar (as, for example, in Suetonius ' Twelve Caesars. This tradition continued in many languages: in German it became " Kaiser. in certain Slavic languages it became " Tsar. in Hungarian it became " Császár. and several more variants. The name derived from Julius Caesar 's cognomen "Caesar" this cognomen was adopted by all Roman emperors, exclusively by the ruling monarch after the Julio-Claudian dynasty had died out. In this tradition Julius Caesar is sometimes described as the first Caesar/emperor (following Suetonius. This is one of the most enduring titles, Caesar and its transliterations appeared in every year from the time of Caesar Augustus to Tsar Symeon II of Bulgaria 's removal from the throne in 1946. Augustus was the honorific first bestowed on Emperor Augustus: after him all Roman emperors added it to their name. Although it had a high symbolical value, something like "elevated" or "sublime" it was generally not used to indicate the office of Emperor itself. Exceptions include the title of the Augustan History, a semi-historical collection of Emperors' biographies of the 2nd and 3rd century. Augustus had (by his last will) granted the feminine form of this honorific ( Augusta) to his wife. Since there was no "title" of Empress( consort) whatsoever, women of the reigning dynasty sought to be granted this honorific, as the highest attainable goal. Few were however granted the title, and certainly not as a rule all wives of reigning Emperors. Imperator (as, for example, in Pliny the Elder 's Naturalis Historia. In the Roman Republic Imperator meant " military) commander. In the late Republic, as in the early years of the new monarchy, Imperator was a title granted to Roman generals by their troops and the Roman Senate after a great victory, roughly comparable to field marshal (head or commander of the entire army. For example, in AD 15 Germanicus was proclaimed Imperator during the reign of his adoptive father Tiberius. Soon thereafter "Imperator" became however a title reserved exclusively for the ruling monarch. This led to "Emperor" in English and, among other examples, Empereur" in French and "Mbreti" in Albanian. The Latin feminine form Imperatrix only developed after "Imperator" had taken on the connotation of "Emperor. Autokrator (Αὐτοκράτωρ) or Basileus (βασιλεύς) although the Greeks used equivalents of "Caesar" Καῖσαρ, Kaisar) and "Augustus" in two forms: transliterated as Αὔγουστος, Augoustos or translated as Σεβαστός, Sebastos) these were rather used as part of the name of the Emperor than as an indication of the office. Instead of developing a new name for the new type of monarchy, they used αὐτοκράτωρ ( autokratōr, only partly overlapping with the modern understanding of " autocrat. or βασιλεύς ( basileus, until then the usual name for " sovereign. Autokratōr was essentially used as a translation of the Latin Imperator in Greek-speaking part of the Roman Empire, but also here there is only partial overlap between the meaning of the original Greek and Latin concepts. For the Greeks Autokratōr was not a military title, and was closer to the Latin dictator concept ( the one with unlimited power. before it came to mean Emperor. Basileus appears not to have been used exclusively in the meaning of "emperor" and specifically, the Roman/Byzantine emperor) before the 7th century, although it was a standard informal designation of the Emperor in the Greek-speaking East. After the turbulent Year of the four emperors in 69, the Flavian Dynasty reigned for three decades. The succeeding Nervan-Antonian Dynasty, ruling for most of the 2nd century, stabilised the Empire. This epoch became known as the era of the Five Good Emperors, and was followed by the short-lived Severan Dynasty. During the Crisis of the 3rd century, Barracks Emperors succeeded one another at short intervals. Three short lived secessionist attempts had their own emperors: the Gallic Empire, the Britannic Empire, and the Palmyrene Empire though the latter used rex more regularly. The Principate (27 BC – 284 AD) period was succeeded by what is known as the Dominate (284 AD – 527 AD) during which Emperor Diocletian tried to put the Empire on a more formal footing. Diocletian sought to address the challenges of the Empire's now vast geography and the instability caused by the informality of succession by the creation of co-emperors and junior emperors. At one point, there were as many as five sharers of the imperium (see: Tetrarchy. In 325 AD Constantine I defeated his rivals and restored single emperor rule, but following his death the empire was divided among his sons. For a time the concept was of one empire ruled by multiple emperors with varying territory under their control, however following the death of Theodosius I the rule was divided between his two sons and increasingly became separate entities. The areas administered from Rome are referred to by historians the Western Roman Empire and those under the immediate authority of Constantinople called the Eastern Roman Empire or (after the Battle of Yarmouk in 636 AD) the Later Roman or Byzantine Empire. The subdivisions and co-emperor system were formally abolished by Emperor Zeno in 480 AD following the death of Julius Nepos last Western Emperor and the ascension of Odoacer as the de facto King of Italy in 476 AD. Byzantine period [ edit] Before the 4th Crusade [ edit] Under Justinian I, reigning in the 6th century, parts of Italy were for a few decades (re)conquered from the Ostrogoths: thus, this famous mosaic, featuring the Byzantine emperor in the center, can be admired at Ravenna. Historians generally refer to the continuing Roman Empire in the east as the Byzantine Empire after Byzantium, the original name of the town that Constantine I would elevate to the Imperial capital as New Rome in AD 330. (The city is more commonly called Constantinople and is today named Istanbul. Although the empire was again subdivided and a co-emperor sent to Italy at the end of the fourth century, the office became unitary again only 95 years later at the request of the Roman Senate and following the death of Julius Nepos, last Western Emperor. This change was a recognition of the reality that little remained of Imperial authority in the areas that had been the Western Empire, with even Rome and Italy itself now ruled by the essentially autonomous Odoacer. These Later Roman "Byzantine" Emperors completed the transition from the idea of the Emperor as a semi-republican official to the Emperor as an absolute monarch. Of particular note was the translation of the Latin Imperator into the Greek Basileus, after Emperor Heraclius changed the official language of the empire from Latin to Greek in AD 620. Basileus, a title which had long been used for Alexander the Great was already in common usage as the Greek word for the Roman emperor, but its definition and sense was "King" in Greek, essentially equivalent with the Latin Rex. Byzantine period emperors also used the Greek word "autokrator" meaning "one who rules himself" or "monarch" which was traditionally used by Greek writers to translate the Latin dictator. Essentially, the Greek language did not incorporate the nuances of the Ancient Roman concepts that distinguished imperium from other forms of political power. In general usage, the Byzantine imperial title evolved from simply "emperor. basileus) to "emperor of the Romans. basileus tōn Rōmaiōn) in the 9th century, to "emperor and autocrat of the Romans. basileus kai autokratōr tōn Rōmaiōn) in the 10th. [4] In fact, none of these (and other) additional epithets and titles had ever been completely discarded. One important distinction between the post Constantine I (reigned AD 306–337) emperors and their pagan predecessors was cesaropapism, the assertion that the Emperor (or other head of state) is also the head of the Church. Although this principle was held by all emperors after Constantine, it met with increasing resistance and ultimately rejection by bishops in the west after the effective end of Imperial power there. This concept became a key element of the meaning of "emperor" in the Byzantine and Orthodox east, but went out of favor in the west with the rise of Roman Catholicism. The Byzantine Empire also produced three women who effectively governed the state: the Empress Irene and the Empresses Zoe and Theodora. Latin emperors [ edit] In 1204 Constantinople fell to the Venetians and the Franks in the Fourth Crusade. Following the tragedy of the horrific sacking of the city, the conquerors declared a new "Empire of Romania" known to historians as the Latin Empire of Constantinople, installing Baldwin IX, Count of Flanders, as Emperor. However, Byzantine resistance to the new empire meant that it was in constant struggle to establish itself. Byzantine Emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos succeeded in recapturing Constantinople in 1261. The Principality of Achaea, a vassal state the empire had created in Morea (Greece) intermittently continued to recognize the authority of the crusader emperors for another half century. Pretenders to the title continued among the European nobility until circa 1383. After the 4th Crusade [ edit] With Constantinople occupied, claimants to the imperial succession styled themselves as emperor in the chief centers of resistance: The Laskarid dynasty in the Empire of Nicaea, the Komnenid dynasty in the Empire of Trebizond and the Doukid dynasty in the Despotate of Epirus. In 1248, Epirus recognized the Nicaean Emperors, who subsequently recaptured Constantinople in 1261. The Trapezuntine emperor formally submitted in Constantinople in 1281, 5] but frequently flouted convention by styling themselves emperor back in Trebizond thereafter. Ottoman Empire [ edit] Agostino Veneziano 's engraving of Ottoman emperor Suleiman the Magnificent wearing his Venetian Helmet. [note 1] Note the four tiers on the helmet, symbolizing his imperial power, and excelling the three-tiered papal tiara. [6] This tiara was made for 115, 000 ducats and offered to Suleiman by the French ambassador Antonio Rincon in 1532. [7] This was a most atypical piece of headgear for a Turkish sultan, which he probably never normally wore, but which he placed beside him when receiving visitors, especially ambassadors. It was crowned with an enormous feather. [8] Ottoman rulers held several titles denoting their Imperial status. These included. citation needed] Sultan, Khan, Sovereign of the Imperial House of Osman, Sultan of Sultans, Khan of Khans, Commander of the Faithful and Successor of the Prophet of the Lord of the Universe, Protector of the Holy Cities of Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem, Emperor of The Three Cities of Constantinople, Adrianopole and Bursa as well as many other cities and countries. [9] After the Ottoman capture of Constantinople in 1453, the Ottoman sultans began to style themselves Kaysar-i Rum (Emperor of the Romans) as they asserted themselves to be the heirs to the Roman Empire by right of conquest. The title was of such importance to them that it led them to eliminate the various Byzantine successor states — and therefore rival claimants — over the next eight years. Though the term "emperor" was rarely used by Westerners of the Ottoman sultan, it was generally accepted by Westerners that he had imperial status. Holy Roman Empire [ edit] The Emperor of the Romans' title was a reflection of the translatio imperii ( transfer of rule) principle that regarded the Holy Roman Emperors as the inheritors of the title of Emperor of the Western Roman Empire, despite the continued existence of the Roman Empire in the east, hence the problem of two emperors. From the time of Otto the Great onward, much of the former Carolingian kingdom of Eastern Francia became the Holy Roman Empire. The prince-electors elected one of their peers as King of the Romans and King of Italy before being crowned by the Pope. The Emperor could also pursue the election of his heir (usually a son) as King, who would then succeed him after his death. This junior King then bore the title of Roman King (King of the Romans. Although technically already ruling, after the election he would be crowned as emperor by the Pope. The last emperor to be crowned by the pope was Charles V; all emperors after him were technically emperors-elect, but were universally referred to as Emperor. Austrian Empire [ edit] The first Austrian Emperor was the last Holy Roman Emperor Francis II. In the face of aggressions by Napoleon, Francis feared for the future of the Holy Roman Empire. He wished to maintain his and his family's Imperial status in the event that the Holy Roman Empire should be dissolved, as it indeed was in 1806 when an Austrian-led army suffered a humiliating defeat at the Battle of Austerlitz. After which, the victorious Napoleon proceeded to dismantle the old Reich by severing a good portion from the empire and turning it into a separate Confederation of the Rhine. With the size of his imperial realm significantly reduced, Francis II, Holy Roman Emperor became Francis I, Emperor of Austria. The new imperial title may have sounded less prestigious than the old one, but Francis' dynasty continued to rule from Austria and a Habsburg monarch was still an emperor ( Kaiser) and not just merely a king ( König) in name. The title lasted just a little over one century until 1918, but it was never clear what territory constituted the " Empire of Austria. When Francis took the title in 1804, the Habsburg lands as a whole were dubbed the Kaisertum Österreich. Kaisertum might literally be translated as "emperordom" on analogy with "kingdom" or "emperor-ship" the term denotes specifically "the territory ruled by an emperor" and is thus somewhat more general than Reich, which in 1804 carried connotations of universal rule. Austria proper (as opposed to the complex of Habsburg lands as a whole) had been an Archduchy since the 15th century, and most of the other territories of the Empire had their own institutions and territorial history, although there were some attempts at centralization, especially during the reign of Marie Therese and her son Joseph II and then finalized in the early 19th century. When Hungary was given self-government in 1867, the non-Hungarian portions were called the Empire of Austria and were officially known as the "Kingdoms and Lands Represented in the Imperial Council ( Reichsrat. The title of Emperor of Austria and the associated Empire were both abolished at the end of the First World War in 1918, when German Austria became a republic and the other kingdoms and lands represented in the Imperial Council established their independence or adhesion to other states. Emperors of Europe [ edit] Byzantium 's close cultural and political interaction with its Balkan neighbors Bulgaria and Serbia, and with Russia (Kievan Rus' then Muscovy) led to the adoption of Byzantine imperial traditions in all of these countries. Bulgaria [ edit] In 913, Simeon I of Bulgaria was crowned Emperor ( Tsar) by the Patriarch of Constantinople and Imperial regent Nicholas Mystikos outside the Byzantine capital. In its final simplified form, the title read "Emperor and Autocrat of all Bulgarians and Romans. Tsar i samodarzhets na vsichki balgari i gartsi in the modern vernacular. The Roman component in the Bulgarian imperial title indicated both rulership over Greek speakers and the derivation of the imperial tradition from the Romans, however this component was never recognised by the Byzantine court. Byzantine recognition of Simeon's imperial title was revoked by the succeeding Byzantine government. The decade 914–924 was spent in destructive warfare between Byzantium and Bulgaria over this and other matters of conflict. The Bulgarian monarch, who had further irritated his Byzantine counterpart by claiming the title "Emperor of the Romans. basileus tōn Rōmaiōn) was eventually recognized, as "Emperor of the Bulgarians. basileus tōn Boulgarōn) by the Byzantine Emperor Romanos I Lakapenos in 924. Byzantine recognition of the imperial dignity of the Bulgarian monarch and the patriarchal dignity of the Bulgarian patriarch was again confirmed at the conclusion of permanent peace and a Bulgarian-Byzantine dynastic marriage in 927. In the meantime, the Bulgarian imperial title may have been also confirmed by the pope. The Bulgarian imperial title "tsar" was adopted by all Bulgarian monarchs up to the fall of Bulgaria under Ottoman rule. 14th-century Bulgarian literary compositions clearly denote the Bulgarian capital ( Tarnovo) as a successor of Rome and Constantinople, in effect, the "Third Rome. After Bulgaria obtained full independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1908, its monarch, who was previously styled Knyaz, prince] took the traditional title of Tsar [king] and was recognized internationally as such. by whom? France [ edit] The kings of the Ancien Régime and the July Monarchy used the title Empereur de France in diplomatic correspondence and treaties with the Ottoman emperor from at least 1673 onwards. The Ottomans insisted on this elevated style while refusing to recognize the Holy Roman Emperors or the Russian tsars because of their rival claims of the Roman crown. In short, it was an indirect insult by the Ottomans to the HRE and the Russians. The French kings also used it for Morocco (1682) and Persia (1715. First French Empire [ edit] Napoleon Bonaparte, who was already First Consul of the French Republic ( Premier Consul de la République française) for life, declared himself Emperor of the French ( Empereur des Français) on 18 May 1804, thus creating the French Empire ( Empire Français. Napoleon relinquished the title of Emperor of the French on 6 April and again on 11 April 1814. Napoleon's infant son, Napoleon II, was recognized by the Council of Peers, as Emperor from the moment of his father's abdication, and therefore reigned (as opposed to ruled) as Emperor for fifteen days, 22 June to 7 July 1815. Elba [ edit] Since 3 May 1814, the Sovereign Principality of Elba was created a miniature non-hereditary Monarchy under the exiled French Emperor Napoleon I. Napoleon I was allowed, by the treaty of Fontainebleau (27 April) to enjoy, for life, the imperial title. The islands were not restyled an empire. On 26 February 1815, Napoleon abandoned Elba for France, reviving the French Empire for a Hundred Days; the Allies declared an end to Napoleon's sovereignty over Elba on 25 March 1815, and on 31 March 1815 Elba was ceded to the restored Grand Duchy of Tuscany by the Congress of Vienna. After his final defeat, Napoleon was treated as a general by the British authorities during his second exile to Atlantic Isle of St. Helena. His title was a matter of dispute with the governor of St Helena, who insisted on addressing him as "General Bonaparte" despite the "historical reality that he had been an emperor" and therefore retained the title. [10] 11] 12] Second French Empire [ edit] Napoleon I's nephew, Napoleon III, resurrected the title of emperor on 2 December 1852, after establishing the Second French Empire in a presidential coup, subsequently approved by a plebiscite. His reign was marked by large scale public works, the development of social policy, and the extension of France's influence throughout the world. During his reign, he also set about creating the Second Mexican Empire (headed by his choice of Maximilian I of Mexico, a member of the House of Habsburg) to regain France's hold in the Americas and to achieve greatness for the 'Latin' race. [13] Napoleon III was deposed on 4 September 1870, after France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. The Third Republic followed and after the death of his son Napoleon (IV) in 1879 during the Zulu War, the Bonapartist movement split, and the Third Republic was to last until 1940. Iberian Peninsula [ edit] Spain [ edit] The origin of the title Imperator totius Hispaniae ( Latin for Emperor of All Spain [note 2] is murky. It was associated with the Leonese monarchy perhaps as far back as Alfonso the Great ( r. 866–910. The last two kings of its Astur-Leonese dynasty were called emperors in a contemporary source. King Sancho III of Navarre conquered Leon in 1034 and began using it. His son, Ferdinand I of Castile also took the title in 1039. Ferdinand's son, Alfonso VI of León and Castile took the title in 1077. It then passed to his son-in-law, Alfonso I of Aragon in 1109. His stepson and Alfonso VI's grandson, Alfonso VII was the only one who actually had an imperial coronation in 1135. The title was not exactly hereditary but self-proclaimed by those who had, wholly or partially, united the Christian northern part of the Iberian Peninsula, often at the expense of killing rival siblings. The popes and Holy Roman emperors protested at the usage of the imperial title as a usurpation of leadership in western Christendom. After Alfonso VII's death in 1157, the title was abandoned, and the kings who used it are not commonly mentioned as having been "emperors" in Spanish or other historiography. After the fall of the Byzantine Empire, the legitimate heir to the throne, Andreas Palaiologos, willed away his claim to Ferdinand and Isabella in 1503. Portugal [ edit] After the independence and proclamation of the Empire of Brazil from the Kingdom of Portugal by Prince Pedro, who became Emperor, in 1822, his father, King John VI of Portugal briefly held the honorific style of Titular Emperor of Brazil and the treatment of His Imperial and Royal Majesty under the 1825 Treaty of Rio de Janeiro, by which Portugal recognized the independence of Brazil. The style of Titular Emperor was a life title, and became extinct upon the holder's demise. John VI held the imperial title for a few months only, from the ratification of the Treaty in November 1825 until his death in March 1826. During those months, however, as John's imperial title was purely honorific while his son, Pedro I, remained the sole monarch of the Brazilian Empire. Great Britain [ edit] In the late 3rd century, by the end of the epoch of the barracks emperors in Rome, there were two Britannic Emperors, reigning for about a decade. After the end of Roman rule in Britain, the Imperator Cunedda forged the Kingdom of Gwynedd in northern Wales, but all his successors were titled kings and princes. England [ edit] There was no consistent title for the king of England before 1066, and monarchs chose to style themselves as they pleased. Imperial titles were used inconsistently, beginning with Athelstan in 930 and ended with the Norman conquest of England. Empress Matilda (1102–1167) is the only English monarch commonly referred to as "emperor" or "empress" but she acquired her title through her marriage to Henry V, Holy Roman Emperor. During the rule of Henry VIII the Statute in Restraint of Appeals declared that 'this realm of England is an erned by one Supreme Head and King having the dignity and royal estate of the imperial Crown of the same. This was in the context of the divorce of Catherine of Aragon and the English Reformation, to emphasize that England had never accepted the quasi-imperial claims of the papacy. Hence England and, by extension its modern successor state, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, is according to English law an Empire ruled by a King endowed with the imperial dignity. However, this has not led to the creation of the title of Emperor in England, nor in Great Britain, nor in the United Kingdom. United Kingdom [ edit] In 1801, George III rejected the title of Emperor when offered. The only period when British monarchs held the title of Emperor in a dynastic succession started when the title Empress of India was created for Queen Victoria. The government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, conferred the additional title upon her by an Act of Parliament, reputedly to assuage the monarch's irritation at being, as a mere Queen, notionally inferior to her own daughter ( Princess Victoria, who was the wife of the reigning German Emperor) the Indian Imperial designation was also formally justified as the expression of Britain succeeding the former Mughal Emperor as suzerain over hundreds of princely states. The Indian Independence Act 1947 provided for the abolition of the use of the title " Emperor of India " by the British monarch, but this was not executed by King George VI until a royal proclamation on 22 June 1948. Despite this, George VI continued as king of India until 1950 and as king of Pakistan until his death in 1952. The last Empress of India was George VI's wife, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. German Empire [ edit] Under the guise of idealism giving way to realism, German nationalism rapidly shifted from its liberal and democratic character in 1848 to Prussian prime minister Otto von Bismarck 's authoritarian Realpolitik. Bismarck wanted to unify the rival German states to achieve his aim of a conservative, Prussian-dominated Germany. Three wars led to military successes and helped to convince German people to do this: the Second war of Schleswig against Denmark in 1864, the Austro-Prussian War against Austria in 1866, and the Franco-Prussian War against the Second French Empire in 1870–71. During the Siege of Paris in 1871, the North German Confederation, supported by its allies from southern Germany, formed the German Empire with the proclamation of the Prussian king Wilhelm I as German Emperor in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles, to the humiliation of the French, who ceased to resist only days later. After his death he was succeeded by his son Frederick III who was only emperor for 99 days. In the same year his son Wilhelm II became the third emperor within a year. He was the last German emperor. After the empire's defeat in World War I the empire, called in German Reich, had a president as head of state instead of an emperor. The use of the word Reich was abandoned after the Second World War. Russia [ edit] In 1472, the niece of the last Byzantine emperor, Sophia Palaiologina, married Ivan III, grand prince of Moscow, who began championing the idea of Russia being the successor to the Byzantine Empire. This idea was represented more emphatically in the composition the monk Filofej addressed to their son Vasili III. After ending Muscovy's dependence on its Mongol overlords in 1480, Ivan III began the usage of the titles Tsar and Autocrat ( samoderzhets. His insistence on recognition as such by the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire since 1489 resulted in the granting of this recognition in 1514 by Emperor Maximilian I to Vasili III. His son Ivan IV emphatically crowned himself Tsar of Russia on 16 January 1547. The word "Tsar" derives from Latin Caesar, but this title was used in Russia as equivalent to "King" the error occurred when medieval Russian clerics referred to the biblical Jewish kings with the same title that was used to designate Roman and Byzantine rulers — "Caesar. On 31 October 1721, Peter I was proclaimed Emperor by the Senate. The title used was Latin " Imperator. which is a westernizing form equivalent to the traditional Slavic title " Tsar. He based his claim partially upon a letter discovered in 1717 written in 1514 from Maximilian I to Vasili III, in which the Holy Roman Emperor used the term in referring to Vasili. A formal address to the ruling Russian monarch adopted thereafter was 'Your Imperial Majesty. The crown prince was addressed as 'Your Imperial Highness. The title has not been used in Russia since the abdication of Emperor Nicholas II on 15 March 1917. Imperial Russia produced four reigning Empresses, all in the eighteenth century. Serbia [ edit] In 1345, the Serbian King Stefan Uroš IV Dušan proclaimed himself Emperor ( Tsar) and was crowned as such at Skopje on Easter 1346 by the newly created Serbian Patriarch, and by the Patriarch of Bulgaria and the autocephalous Archbishop of Ohrid. His imperial title was recognized by Bulgaria and various other neighbors and trading partners but not by the Byzantine Empire. In its final simplified form, the Serbian imperial title read "Emperor of Serbs and Greeks. in modern Serbian. It was only employed by Stefan Uroš IV Dušan and his son Stefan Uroš V in Serbia (until his death in 1371) after which it became extinct. A half-brother of Dušan, Simeon Uroš, and then his son Jovan Uroš, claimed the same title, until the latter's abdication in 1373, while ruling as dynasts in Thessaly. The "Greek" component in the Serbian imperial title indicates both rulership over Greeks and the derivation of the imperial tradition from the Romans. Emperors in the Americas [ edit] Pre-Columbian traditions [ edit] The Aztec and Inca traditions are unrelated to one another. Both were conquered under the reign of King Charles I of Spain who was simultaneously emperor-elect of the Holy Roman Empire during the fall of the Aztecs and fully emperor during the fall of the Incas. Incidentally by being king of Spain, he was also Roman (Byzantine) emperor in pretence through Andreas Palaiologos. The translations of their titles were provided by the Spanish. Aztec Empire [ edit] The only pre-Columbian North American rulers to be commonly called emperors were the Hueyi Tlatoani of the Aztec Empire (1375–1521. It was an elected monarchy chosen by the elite. Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés slew Emperor Cuauhtémoc and installed puppet rulers who became vassals for Spain. Inca Empire [ edit] The only pre-Columbian South American rulers to be commonly called emperors were the Sapa Inca of the Inca Empire (1438–1533. Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro, conquered the Inca for Spain, killed Emperor Atahualpa, and installed puppets as well. Atahualpa may actually be considered a usurper as he had achieved power by killing his half-brother and he did not perform the required coronation with the imperial crown mascaipacha by the Huillaq Uma (high priest. Post-Columbian Americas [ edit] Brazil [ edit] When Napoleon I ordered the invasion of Portugal in 1807 because it refused to join the Continental System, the Portuguese Braganzas moved their capital to Rio de Janeiro to avoid the fate of the Spanish Bourbons (Napoleon I arrested them and made his brother Joseph king. When the French general Jean-Andoche Junot arrived in Lisbon, the Portuguese fleet had already left with all the local elite. In 1808, under a British naval escort, the fleet arrived in Brazil. Later, in 1815, the Portuguese Prince Regent (since 1816 King João VI) proclaimed the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves, as a union of three kingdoms, lifting Brazil from its colonial status. After the fall of Napoleon I and the Liberal revolution in Portugal, the Portuguese royal family returned to Europe (1821. Prince Pedro of Braganza (King João's older son) stayed in South America acting as regent of the local kingdom, but, two years later in 1822, he proclaimed himself Pedro I, first Emperor of Brazil. He did, however, recognize his father, João VI, as Titular Emperor of Brazil —a purely honorific title—until João VI's death in 1826. The empire came to an end in 1889, with the overthrow of Emperor Pedro II (Pedro I's son and successor) when the Brazilian republic was proclaimed. Haiti [ edit] Haiti was declared an empire by its ruler, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, who made himself Jacques I, on 20 May 1805. He was assassinated the next year. Haiti again became an empire from 1849 to 1859 under Faustin Soulouque. Mexico [ edit] In Mexico, the First Mexican Empire was the first of two empires created. After the declaration of independence on September 15, 1821, it was the intention of the Mexican parliament to establish a commonwealth whereby the King of Spain, Ferdinand VII, would also be Emperor of Mexico, but in which both countries were to be governed by separate laws and with their own legislative offices. Should the king refuse the position, the law provided for a member of the House of Bourbon to accede to the Mexican throne. Ferdinand VII, however, did not recognize the independence and said that Spain would not allow any other European prince to take the throne of Mexico. By request of Parliament, the president of the regency Agustín de Iturbide was proclaimed emperor of Mexico on 12 July 1822 as Agustín I. Agustín de Iturbide was the general who helped secure Mexican independence from Spanish rule, but was overthrown by the Plan of Casa Mata. In 1863, the invading French, under Napoleon III (see above) in alliance with Mexican conservatives and nobility, helped create the Second Mexican Empire, and invited Archduke Maximilian, of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, younger brother of the Austrian Emperor Franz Josef I, to become emperor Maximilian I of Mexico. The childless Maximilian and his consort Empress Carlota of Mexico, daughter of Leopold I of Belgium, adopted Agustín's grandsons Agustin and Salvador as his heirs to bolster his claim to the throne of Mexico. Maximilian and Carlota made Chapultepec Castle their home, which has been the only palace in North America to house sovereigns. After the withdrawal of French protection in 1867, Maximilian was captured and executed by the liberal forces of Benito Juárez. This empire led to French influence in the Mexican culture and also immigration from France, Belgium, and Switzerland to Mexico. Persia (Iran. edit] In Persia, from the time of Darius the Great, Persian rulers used the title " King of Kings. Shahanshah in Persian) since they had dominion over peoples from the borders of India to the borders of Greece and Egypt. Alexander probably crowned himself shahanshah after conquering Persia [ citation needed] bringing the phrase basileus ton basileon to Greek. It is also known that Tigranes the Great, king of Armenia, was named as the king of kings when he made his empire after defeating the Parthians. Georgian title "mephet'mephe" has the same meaning. The last shahanshah ( Mohammad Reza Pahlavi) was ousted in 1979 following the Iranian Revolution. Shahanshah is usually translated as king of kings or simply king for ancient rulers of the Achaemenid, Arsacid, and Sassanid dynasties, and often shortened to shah for rulers since the Safavid dynasty in the 16th century. Iranian rulers were typically regarded in the West as emperors. Indian subcontinent [ edit] Samraat" redirects here. For the 1982 film, see Samraat (film. The Sanskrit word for emperor is Samrāj or Samraat or Chakravartin. This word has been used as an epithet of various Vedic deities, like Varuna, and has been attested in the Rig-Veda, possibly the oldest compiled book among the Indo-Europeans. Chakravarti refers to the king of kings. A Chakravarti is not only a sovereign ruler but also has feudatories. Typically, in the later Vedic age, a Hindu high king ( Maharaja) was only called Samraaṭ after performing the Vedic Rajasuya sacrifice, enabling him by religious tradition to claim superiority over the other kings and princes. Another word for emperor is sārvabhaumā. The title of Samraaṭ has been used by many rulers of the Indian subcontinent as claimed by the Hindu mythologies. In proper history, most historians call Chandragupta Maurya the first samraaṭ (emperor) of the Indian subcontinent, because of the huge empire he ruled. The most famous emperor was his grandson Ashoka the Great. Other dynasties that are considered imperial by historians are the Kushanas, Guptas, Vijayanagara, Kakatiya, Hoysala and the Cholas. Rudhramadevi (1259–1289) was one of the most prominent rulers of the Kakatiya dynasty on the Deccan Plateau, being one of the few ruling queens (empress) in Indian history. After India was invaded by the Mongol Khans and Turkic Muslims, the rulers of their major states on the subcontinent were titled Sultān or Badshah or Shahanshah. In this manner, the only empress-regnant ever to have actually sat on the throne of Delhi was Razia Sultan. The Mughal Emperors were the only Indian rulers for whom the term was consistently used by Western contemporaries. The emperors of the Maratha Empire were called Chhatrapati. From 1877 to 1947 the monarch of the United Kingdom adopted the additional title of Emperor/Empress of India ( Kaisar-i-Hind. Africa [ edit] Ethiopia [ edit] From 1270 the Solomonic dynasty of Ethiopia used the title Nəgusä Nägäst, literally "King of Kings. The use of the king of kings style began a millennium earlier in this region, however, with the title being used by the Kings of Aksum, beginning with Sembrouthes in the 3rd century. Another title used by this dynasty was Itegue Zetopia. Itegue translates as Empress, and was used by the only reigning Empress, Zauditu, along with the official title Negiste Negest ( Queen of Kings. In 1936, the Italian king Victor Emmanuel III claimed the title of Emperor of Ethiopia after Ethiopia was occupied by Italy during the Second Italo-Abyssinian War. After the defeat of the Italians by the British and the Ethiopians in 1941, Haile Selassie was restored to the throne but Victor Emmanuel did not relinquish his claim to the title until 1943. [14] Central African Empire [ edit] In 1976, President Jean-Bédel Bokassa of the Central African Republic, proclaimed the country to be an autocratic Central African Empire, and made himself Emperor as Bokassa I. The expenses of his coronation ceremony actually bankrupted the country. He was overthrown three years later and the republic was restored. [15] East Asian tradition (Sinosphere. edit] The rulers of China and (once Westerners became aware of the role) Japan were always accepted in the West as emperors, and referred to as such. The claims of other East Asian monarchies to the title may have been accepted for diplomatic purposes, but it was not necessarily used in more general contexts. China [ edit] The East Asian tradition is different from the Roman tradition, having arisen separately. What links them together is the use of the Chinese logographs 皇 ( huáng) and 帝 ( dì) which together or individually are imperial. Because of the cultural influence of China, China's neighbors adopted these titles or had their native titles conform in hanzi. Anyone who spoke to the emperor was to address the emperor as bìxià (陛下, lit. the "Bottom of the Steps. corresponding to " Imperial Majesty. shèngshàng (聖上, lit. Holy Highness) or wànsuì (萬歲, lit. "You, of Ten Thousand Years. In 221 BC, Ying Zheng, who was king of Qin at the time, proclaimed himself Shi Huangdi (始皇帝) which translates as "first emperor. Huangdi is composed of huang ( august one" 皇) and di ( sage-king" 帝) and referred to legendary/mythological sage-emperors living several millennia earlier, of which three were huang and five were di. Thus Zheng became Qin Shi Huang, abolishing the system where the huang / di titles were reserved to dead and/or mythological rulers. Since then, the title "king" became a lower ranked title, and later divided into two grades. Although not as popular, the title 王 wang (king or prince) was still used by many monarchs and dynasties in China up to the Taipings in the 19th century. 王 is pronounced vương in Vietnamese, ō in Japanese, and wang in Korean. The imperial title continued in China until the Qing Dynasty was overthrown in 1912. The title was briefly revived from 12 December 1915 to 22 March 1916 by President Yuan Shikai and again in early July 1917 when General Zhang Xun attempted to restore last Qing emperor Puyi to the throne. Puyi retained the title and attributes of a foreign emperor, as a personal status, until 1924. After the Japanese occupied Manchuria in 1931, they proclaimed it to be the Empire of Manchukuo, and Puyi became emperor of Manchukuo. This empire ceased to exist when it was occupied by the Soviet Red Army in 1945. [16] In general, an emperor would have one empress ( Huanghou, 皇后) at one time, although posthumous entitlement to empress for a concubine was not uncommon. The earliest known usage of huanghou was in the Han Dynasty. The emperor would generally select the empress from his concubines. In subsequent dynasties, when the distinction between wife and concubine became more accentuated, the crown prince would have chosen an empress-designate before his reign. Imperial China produced only one reigning empress, Wu Zetian, and she used the same Chinese title as an emperor ( Huangdi, 皇帝. Wu Zetian then reigned for about 15 years (690–705 AD. Japan [ edit] Emperor Hirohito (裕仁) or the Shōwa Emperor (昭和天皇) the last Japanese Emperor having ruled with prerogative powers, combined with assumption of divinity (photographed 1926. The earliest Emperor recorded in Kojiki and Nihon Shoki is Emperor Jimmu, who is said to be a descendant of Amaterasu 's grandson Ninigi who descended from Heaven ( Tenson kōrin. If one believes what is written in Nihon Shoki, the Emperors have an unbroken direct male lineage that goes back more than 2, 600 years. In ancient Japan, the earliest titles for the sovereign were either ヤマト大王/大君 ( yamato ōkimi, Grand King of Yamato) 倭王/倭国王 ( waō / wakokuō, King of Wa, used externally) or 治天下大王 ( amenoshita shiroshimesu ōkimi, Grand King who rules all under heaven, used internally. As early as the 7th century, the word 天皇 (which can be read either as sumera no mikoto, divine order, or as tennō, Heavenly Emperor, the latter being derived from a Tang Chinese term referring to the Pole star around which all other stars revolve) began to be used. The earliest use of this term is found on a wooden slat, or mokkan, unearthed in Asuka-mura, Nara Prefecture in 1998. The slat dated back to the reign of Emperor Tenmu and Empress Jitō. The reading 'Tennō' has become the standard title for the Japanese sovereign up to the present age. The term 帝 ( mikado, Emperor) is also found in literary sources. Japanese monarchs were given their official title by the Chinese emperor. The new Japanese monarch after coming into power would send a representative to China and receive the anointment. They would receive their official title on several golden plates of several meters tall. Since the Japanese monarchs changed their title to 天皇 (Heavenly Emperor) in 607, the Chinese emperor refused to anoint the Japanese king, thus, ending relations with Japan for the next few hundred years. [17] In the Japanese language, the word tennō is restricted to Japan's own monarch; kōtei (皇帝) is used for foreign emperors. Historically, retired emperors often kept power over a child-emperor as de facto regent. For a long time, a shōgun (formally the imperial military dictator, but made hereditary) or an imperial regent wielded actual political power. In fact, through much of Japanese history, the emperor has been little more than a figurehead. The Meiji Restoration restored practical abilities and the political system under Emperor Meiji. [18] The last shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu resigned in 1868. After World War II, all claims of divinity were dropped (see Ningen-sengen. The Diet acquired all prerogative powers of the Crown, reverting the latter to a ceremonial role. [19] By the end of the 20th century, Japan was the only country with an emperor on the throne. As of the early 21st century, Japan's succession law prohibits a female from ascending the throne. With the birth of a daughter as the first child of the then-Crown Prince Naruhito, Japan considered abandoning that rule. However, shortly after the announcement that Princess Kiko was pregnant with her third child, the proposal to alter the Imperial Household Law was suspended by then-Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. On 3 January 2007, as the child turned out to be a son, Prime Minister Shinzō Abe announced that he would drop the proposal. [20] Emperor Naruhito is the 126th monarch according to Japan's traditional order of succession. The second and third in line of succession are Fumihito, Prince Akishino and Prince Hisahito. Historically, Japan has had eight reigning empresses who used the genderless title Tennō, rather than the female consort title kōgō (皇后) or chūgū (中宮. There is ongoing discussion of the Japanese Imperial succession controversy. Although current Japanese law prohibits female succession, all Japanese emperors claim to trace their lineage to Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess of the Shintō religion. Thus, the Emperor is thought to be the highest authority of the Shinto religion, and one of his duties is to perform Shinto rituals for the people of Japan. Korea [ edit] Some rulers of Goguryeo (37 BC–AD 668) used the title of Taewang ( 태왕; 太王) literally translated as "Greatest King. The title of Taewang was also used by some rulers of Silla (57 BC–AD 935) including Beopheung and Jinheung. The rulers of Balhae (698–926) internally called themselves Seongwang ( 성왕; 聖王; lit. "Holy King. 21] The rulers of Goryeo (918–1392) used the titles of emperor and Son of Heaven of the East of the Ocean ( 해동천자; 海東天子. Goryeo's imperial system ended in 1270 with capitulation to the Mongol Empire. [22] In 1897, Gojong, the King of Joseon, proclaimed the founding of the Korean Empire (1897–1910) becoming the Emperor of Korea. He declared the era name of "Gwangmu. 광무; 光武) meaning "Bright and Martial. The Korean Empire lasted until 1910, when it was annexed by the Empire of Japan. Mongolia [ edit] The title Khagan ( khan of khans or grand khan) was held by Genghis Khan, founder of the Mongol Empire in 1206; he also formally took the Chinese title huangdi, as "Genghis Emperor. 成吉思皇帝; Chéngjísī Huángdì. Only the Khagans from Genghis Khan to the fall of the Yuan dynasty in 1368 are normally referred to as Emperors in English. Vietnam [ edit] Ngô Quyền, the first ruler of Đại Việt as an independent state, used the title Vương (王, King. However, after the death of Ngô Quyền, the country immersed in a civil war known as Chaos of the 12 Lords that lasted for over 20 years. In the end, Đinh Bộ Lĩnh unified the country after defeating all the warlords and became the first ruler of Đại Việt to use the title Hoàng Đế (皇帝, Emperor) in 968. Succeeding rulers in Vietnam then continued to use this Emperor title until 1806 when this title was stopped being used for a century. Đinh Bộ Lĩnh wasn't the first to claim the title of Đế (帝, Emperor. Before him, Lý Bí and Mai Thúc Loan also claimed this title. However, their rules were very short lived. The Vietnamese emperors also gave this title to their ancestors who were lords or influence figures in the previous dynasty like the Chinese emperors. This practice is one of many indications of the idea "Vietnam's equality with China" which remained intact up to the twentieth century. [23] In 1802 the newly established Nguyễn dynasty requested canonization from Chinese Jiaqing Emperor and received the title Quốc Vương (國王, King of a State) and the name of the country as An Nam (安南) instead Đại Việt (大越. To avoid unnecessary armed conflicts, the Vietnamese rulers accepted this in diplomatic relation and use the title Emperor only domestically. However, Vietnamese rulers never accepted the vassalage relationship with China and always refused to come to Chinese courts to pay homage to Chinese rulers (a sign of vassalage acceptance. China waged a number of wars against Vietnam throughout history, and after each failure, settled for the tributary relationship. The Yuan dynasty under Kublai Khan waged three wars against Vietnam to force it into a vassalage relationship but after successive failures, Kublai Khan 's successor, Temür Khan, finally settled for a tributary relationship with Vietnam. Vietnam sent tributary missions to China once in three years (with some periods of disruptions) until the 19th century, Sino-French War France replaced China in control of northern Vietnam. The emperors of the last dynasty of Vietnam continued to hold this title until the French conquered Vietnam. The emperor, however, was then a puppet figure only and could easily be disposed of by the French for more pro-France figure. Japan took Vietnam from France and the Axis -occupied Vietnam was declared an empire by the Japanese in March 1945. The line of emperors came to an end with Bảo Đại, who was deposed after the war, although he later served as head of state of South Vietnam from 1949-55. Oceania [ edit] The lone holders of the imperial title in Oceania were the heads of the semi-mythical Tuʻi Tonga Empire. Fictional uses [ edit] There have been many fictional emperors in movies and books. To see a list of these emperors, see Category of fictional emperors and empresses. See also [ edit] Auctoritas Lists of emperors Notes [ edit] Agostino never saw the Sultan, but probably did see and sketch the helmet in Venice. ^ Before the emergence of the modern country of Spain (beginning with the union of Castile and Aragon in 1492) the Latin word Hispania, in any of the Iberian Romance languages, either in singular or plural forms (in English: Spain or Spains) was used to refer to the whole of the Iberian Peninsula, and not exclusively, as in modern usage, to the country of Spain, thus excluding Portugal. Bernardo Bertolucci's "The Last Emperor" is a monumental, perfect film, and stands as one of the great artistic achievements in any artistic medium. Told in a complicated flashback/ flash-forward style, it's the story of Pu Yi (born 1906) who was the last absolute monarch of China. During his lifetime he falls from the Lord of Ten Thousand Years, the emperor/God of billions of Chinese, to an anonymous peasant worker in communist China. Pu Yi was the child emperor from 1908 until the Chinese revolution in 1911 when he had to abdicate. He was allowed to remain in the Forbidden City but was stripped of his power by the communists. He was expelled from the city in 1924 by a warlord. In 1932, Puyi was installed by the Japanese as the ruler of Manchukuo, a puppet state of Imperial Japan. At the end of World War II, Pu yi was captured by the Soviet Red Army and turned over to the Chinese communists. Considered a traitor, he spent ten years in a reeducation camp until he was declared reformed. He voiced his support for the Communists and worked at the Beijing Botanical Gardens. This film vividly portrays the change from the imperial and religious traditions of ancient China to the godless totalitarianism of modern communist China, so the film is, on one level, the story of China's revolutionary transition from imperialism to communism. Visually the film is stunning especially the scenes in the Forbidden City. It was the first film to receive permission to film in the Forbidden City. The film can be enjoyed on the first viewing but really demands more than one viewing and some knowledge of history. In this respect it resembles Akira Kurasawa's masterpiece "The Seven Samurai. The cast includes John Lone as emperor Pu Yi, Joan Chen, and Peter O'Toole. The film won 9 Oscars including best director and best film. A must see on DVD widescreen or in the theater.

When you get off the merry go round after eating too much food. 26.

Rabies A dog with rabies in the paralytic (post-furious) stage Specialty Infectious disease Symptoms Fever, fear of water, confusion, excessive salivation, hallucinations, trouble sleeping, paralysis, coma [1] 2] Causes Rabies virus, Australian bat lyssavirus [3] Prevention Rabies vaccine, animal control, rabies immunoglobulin [1] Prognosis Nearly always death [1] Deaths 17, 400 (2015) 4] Rabies is a viral disease that causes inflammation of the brain in humans and other mammals. [1] Early symptoms can include fever and tingling at the site of exposure. [1] These symptoms are followed by one or more of the following symptoms: violent movements, uncontrolled excitement, fear of water, an inability to move parts of the body, confusion, and loss of consciousness. [1] Once symptoms appear, the result is nearly always death. [1] The time period between contracting the disease and the start of symptoms is usually one to three months, but can vary from less than one week to more than one year. [1] The time depends on the distance the virus must travel along peripheral nerves to reach the central nervous system. [5] Rabies is caused by lyssaviruses, including the rabies virus and Australian bat lyssavirus. [3] It is spread when an infected animal bites or scratches a human or other animal. [1] Saliva from an infected animal can also transmit rabies if the saliva comes into contact with the eyes, mouth, or nose. [1] Globally, dogs are the most common animal involved. [1] In countries where dogs commonly have the disease, more than 99% of rabies cases are the direct result of dog bites. [6] In the Americas, bat bites are the most common source of rabies infections in humans, and less than 5% of cases are from dogs. [1] 6] Rodents are very rarely infected with rabies. [6] The disease can be diagnosed only after the start of symptoms. [1] Animal control and vaccination programs have decreased the risk of rabies from dogs in a number of regions of the world. [1] Immunizing people before they are exposed is recommended for those at high risk, including those who work with bats or who spend prolonged periods in areas of the world where rabies is common. [1] In people who have been exposed to rabies, the rabies vaccine and sometimes rabies immunoglobulin are effective in preventing the disease if the person receives the treatment before the start of rabies symptoms. [1] Washing bites and scratches for 15 minutes with soap and water, povidone-iodine, or detergent may reduce the number of viral particles and may be somewhat effective at preventing transmission. [1] 7] As of 2016, only fourteen people had survived a rabies infection after showing symptoms. [8] 9] 10] Rabies caused about 17, 400 human deaths worldwide in 2015. [4] More than 95% of human deaths from rabies occur in Africa and Asia. [1] About 40% of deaths occur in children under the age of 15. [11] Rabies is present in more than 150 countries and on all continents but Antarctica. [1] More than 3 billion people live in regions of the world where rabies occurs. [1] A number of countries, including Australia and Japan, as well as much of Western Europe, do not have rabies among dogs. [12] 13] Many Pacific islands do not have rabies at all. [13] It is classified as a neglected tropical disease. [14] Signs and symptoms The period between infection and the first symptoms (incubation period) is typically 1–3 months in humans. [15] This period may be as short as four days or longer than six years, depending on the location and severity of the wound and the amount of virus introduced. [15] Initial symptoms of rabies are often nonspecific such as fever and headache. [15] As rabies progresses and causes inflammation of the brain and meninges, symptoms can include slight or partial paralysis, anxiety, insomnia, confusion, agitation, abnormal behavior, paranoia, terror, and hallucinations. [5] 15] The person may also have fear of water. [1] The symptoms eventually progress to delirium, and coma. [5] 15] Death usually occurs 2 to 10 days after first symptoms. Survival is almost unknown once symptoms have presented, even with intensive care. [15] 16] Fear of water Hydrophobia ( fear of water" is the historic name for rabies. [17] It refers to a set of symptoms in the later stages of an infection in which the person has difficulty swallowing, shows panic when presented with liquids to drink, and cannot quench their thirst. Any mammal infected with the virus may demonstrate hydrophobia. [18] Saliva production is greatly increased, and attempts to drink, or even the intention or suggestion of drinking, may cause excruciatingly painful spasms of the muscles in the throat and larynx. This can be attributed to the fact that the virus multiplies and assimilates in the salivary glands of the infected animal with the effect of further transmission through biting. The ability to transmit the virus would decrease significantly if the infected individual could swallow saliva and water. [19] Hydrophobia is commonly associated with furious rabies, which affects 80% of rabies-infected people. The remaining 20% may experience a paralytic form of rabies that is marked by muscle weakness, loss of sensation, and paralysis; this form of rabies does not usually cause fear of water. [18] Cause Drawing of the rabies virus. Rabies is caused by a number of lyssaviruses including the rabies virus and Australian bat lyssavirus. [3] Duvenhage lyssavirus may cause a rabies-like infection. [20] The rabies virus is the type species of the Lyssavirus genus, in the family Rhabdoviridae, order Mononegavirales. Lyssavirions have helical symmetry, with a length of about 180  nm and a cross-section of about 75 nm. [21] These virions are enveloped and have a single-stranded RNA genome with negative sense. The genetic information is packed as a ribonucleoprotein complex in which RNA is tightly bound by the viral nucleoprotein. The RNA genome of the virus encodes five genes whose order is highly conserved: nucleoprotein (N) phosphoprotein (P) matrix protein (M) glycoprotein (G) and the viral RNA polymerase (L. 22] Once within a muscle or nerve cell, the virus undergoes replication. The trimeric spikes on the exterior of the membrane of the virus interact with a specific cell receptor, the most likely one being the acetylcholine receptor. The cellular membrane pinches in a procession known as pinocytosis and allows entry of the virus into the cell by way of an endosome. The virus then uses the acidic environment, which is necessary, of that endosome and binds to its membrane simultaneously, releasing its five proteins and single strand RNA into the cytoplasm. [23] The L protein then transcribes five mRNA strands and a positive strand of RNA all from the original negative strand RNA using free nucleotides in the cytoplasm. These five mRNA strands are then translated into their corresponding proteins (P, L, N, G and M proteins) at free ribosomes in the cytoplasm. Some proteins require post-translative modifications. For example, the G protein travels through the rough endoplasmic reticulum, where it undergoes further folding, and is then transported to the Golgi apparatus, where a sugar group is added to it ( glycosylation. 23] When there are enough viral proteins, the viral polymerase will begin to synthesize new negative strands of RNA from the template of the positive strand RNA. These negative strands will then form complexes with the N, P, L and M proteins and then travel to the inner membrane of the cell, where a G protein has embedded itself in the membrane. The G protein then coils around the N-P-L-M complex of proteins taking some of the host cell membrane with it, which will form the new outer envelope of the virus particle. The virus then buds from the cell. [23] From the point of entry, the virus is neurotropic, traveling along the neural pathways into the central nervous system. The virus usually first infects muscle cells close to the site of infection, where they are able to replicate without being 'noticed' by the host's immune system. Once enough virus has been replicated, they begin to bind to acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction. [24] The virus then travels through the nerve cell axon via retrograde transport, as its P protein interacts with dynein, a protein present in the cytoplasm of nerve cells. Once the virus reaches the cell body it travels rapidly to the central nervous system (CNS) replicating in motor neurons and eventually reaching the brain. [5] After the brain is infected, the virus travels centrifugally to the peripheral and autonomic nervous systems, eventually migrating to the salivary glands, where it is ready to be transmitted to the next host. [25] 317 Transmission All warm-blooded species, including humans, may become infected with the rabies virus and develop symptoms. Birds were first artificially infected with rabies in 1884; however, infected birds are largely, if not wholly, asymptomatic, and recover. [26] Other bird species have been known to develop rabies antibodies, a sign of infection, after feeding on rabies-infected mammals. [27] 28] The virus has also adapted to grow in cells of cold-blooded vertebrates. [29] 30] Most animals can be infected by the virus and can transmit the disease to humans. Infected bats, 31] 32] monkeys, raccoons, foxes, skunks, cattle, wolves, coyotes, dogs, cats, and mongooses (normally either the small Asian mongoose or the yellow mongoose) 33] present the greatest risk to humans. Rabies may also spread through exposure to infected bears, domestic farm animals, groundhogs, weasels, and other wild carnivorans. However, lagomorphs, such as hares and rabbits, and small rodents such as chipmunks, gerbils, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, rats, and squirrels, are almost never found to be infected with rabies and are not known to transmit rabies to humans. [34] Bites from mice, rats, or squirrels rarely require rabies prevention because these rodents are typically killed by any encounter with a larger, rabid animal, and would, therefore, not be carriers. [35] The Virginia opossum is resistant but not immune to rabies. [36] The virus is usually present in the nerves and saliva of a symptomatic rabid animal. [37] 38] The route of infection is usually, but not always, by a bite. In many cases, the infected animal is exceptionally aggressive, may attack without provocation, and exhibits otherwise uncharacteristic behavior. [39] This is an example of a viral pathogen modifying the behavior of its host to facilitate its transmission to other hosts. Transmission between humans is extremely rare. A few cases have been recorded through transplant surgery. [40] The only well-documented cases of rabies caused by human-to-human transmission occurred among eight recipients of transplanted corneas and among three recipients of solid organs. [41] In addition to transmission from cornea and organ transplants, bite and non-bite exposures inflicted by infected humans could theoretically transmit rabies, but no such cases have been documented, since infected humans are usually hospitalized and necessary precautions taken. Casual contact, such as touching a person with rabies or contact with non-infectious fluid or tissue (urine, blood, feces) does not constitute an exposure and does not require post-exposure prophylaxis. Additionally, as the virus is present in sperm or vaginal secretions, spread through sex may be possible. [42] After a typical human infection by bite, the virus enters the peripheral nervous system. It then travels along the afferent nerves toward the central nervous system. [43] During this phase, the virus cannot be easily detected within the host, and vaccination may still confer cell-mediated immunity to prevent symptomatic rabies. When the virus reaches the brain, it rapidly causes encephalitis, the prodromal phase, which is the beginning of the symptoms. Once the patient becomes symptomatic, treatment is almost never effective and mortality is over 99. Rabies may also inflame the spinal cord, producing transverse myelitis. [44] 45] Diagnosis Rabies can be difficult to diagnose because, in the early stages, it is easily confused with other diseases or with aggressiveness. [46] The reference method for diagnosing rabies is the fluorescent antibody test (FAT) an immunohistochemistry procedure, which is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO. 47] The FAT relies on the ability of a detector molecule (usually fluorescein isothiocyanate) coupled with a rabies-specific antibody, forming a conjugate, to bind to and allow the visualisation of rabies antigen using fluorescent microscopy techniques. Microscopic analysis of samples is the only direct method that allows for the identification of rabies virus-specific antigen in a short time and at a reduced cost, irrespective of geographical origin and status of the host. It has to be regarded as the first step in diagnostic procedures for all laboratories. Autolysed samples can, however, reduce the sensitivity and specificity of the FAT. [48] The RT PCR assays proved to be a sensitive and specific tool for routine diagnostic purposes, 49] particularly in decomposed samples [50] or archival specimens. [51] The diagnosis can be reliably made from brain samples taken after death. The diagnosis can also be made from saliva, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid samples, but this is not as sensitive or reliable as brain samples. [48] Cerebral inclusion bodies called Negri bodies are 100% diagnostic for rabies infection but are found in only about 80% of cases. [21] If possible, the animal from which the bite was received should also be examined for rabies. [52] Some light microscopy techniques may also be used to diagnose rabies at a tenth of the cost of traditional fluorescence microscopy techniques, allowing identification of the disease in less-developed countries. [53] A test for rabies, known as LN34, is easier to run on a dead animal's brain and might help determine who does and does not need post-exposure prevention. [54] The test was developed by the CDC in 2018. [54] Differential diagnosis The differential diagnosis in a case of suspected human rabies may initially include any cause of encephalitis, in particular infection with viruses such as herpesviruses, enteroviruses, and arboviruses such as West Nile virus. The most important viruses to rule out are herpes simplex virus type one, varicella zoster virus, and (less commonly) enteroviruses, including coxsackieviruses, echoviruses, polioviruses, and human enteroviruses 68 to 71. [55] New causes of viral encephalitis are also possible, as was evidenced by the 1999 outbreak in Malaysia of 300 cases of encephalitis with a mortality rate of 40% caused by Nipah virus, a newly recognized paramyxovirus. [56] Likewise, well-known viruses may be introduced into new locales, as is illustrated by the outbreak of encephalitis due to West Nile virus in the eastern United States. [57] Epidemiologic factors, such as season, geographic location, and the patient's age, travel history, and possible exposure to bites, rodents, and ticks, may help direct the diagnosis. Prevention Almost all human cases of rabies were fatal until a vaccine was developed in 1885 by Louis Pasteur and Émile Roux. Their original vaccine was harvested from infected rabbits, from which the virus in the nerve tissue was weakened by allowing it to dry for five to ten days. [58] Similar nerve tissue-derived vaccines are still used in some countries, as they are much cheaper than modern cell culture vaccines. [59] The human diploid cell rabies vaccine was started in 1967. Less expensive purified chicken embryo cell vaccine and purified vero cell rabies vaccine are now available. [52] A recombinant vaccine called V-RG has been used in Belgium, France, Germany, and the United States to prevent outbreaks of rabies in undomesticated animals. [60] Immunization before exposure has been used in both human and nonhuman populations, where, as in many jurisdictions, domesticated animals are required to be vaccinated. [61] The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Communicable Disease Surveillance 2007 Annual Report states the following can help reduce the risk of contracting rabies: 62] Vaccinating dogs, cats, and ferrets against rabies Keeping pets under supervision Not handling wild animals or strays Contacting an animal control officer upon observing a wild animal or a stray, especially if the animal is acting strangely If bitten by an animal, washing the wound with soap and water for 10 to 15 minutes and contacting a healthcare provider to determine if post-exposure prophylaxis is required 28 September is World Rabies Day, which promotes the information, prevention, and elimination of the disease. [63] Vaccinating other animals In Asia and in parts of the Americas and Africa, dogs remain the principal host. Mandatory vaccination of animals is less effective in rural areas. Especially in developing countries, pets may not be privately kept and their destruction may be unacceptable. Oral vaccines can be safely distributed in baits, a practice that has successfully reduced rabies in rural areas of Canada, France, and the United States. In Montreal, Quebec, Canada, baits are successfully used on raccoons in the Mount-Royal Park area. Vaccination campaigns may be expensive, and cost-benefit analysis suggests baits may be a cost-effective method of control. [64] In Ontario, a dramatic drop in rabies was recorded when an aerial bait-vaccination campaign was launched. [65] The number of recorded human deaths from rabies in the United States has dropped from 100 or more annually in the early 20th century to one or two per year due to widespread vaccination of domestic dogs and cats and the development of human vaccines and immunoglobulin treatments. Most deaths now result from bat bites, which may go unnoticed by the victim and hence untreated. [66] Treatment After exposure Treatment after exposure can prevent the disease if given within 10 days. The rabies vaccine is 100% effective if given early, and still has a chance of success if delivery is delayed. [21] 23] 67] Every year, more than 15 million people get vaccination after potential exposure. While this works well, the cost is significant. [68] In the US it is recommended people receive one dose of human rabies immunoglobulin (HRIG) and four doses of rabies vaccine over a 14-day period. [69] HRIG is expensive and makes up most of the cost of post exposure treatment, ranging as high as several thousand dollars. [70] As much as possible of this dose should be injected around the bites, with the remainder being given by deep intramuscular injection at a site distant from the vaccination site. [23] People who have previously been vaccinated against rabies do not need to receive the immunoglobulin, only the postexposure vaccinations on days 0 and 3. [71] The side effects of modern cell-based vaccines are similar to flu shots. The old nerve-tissue-based vaccinations required multiple injections into the abdomen with a large needle but is inexpensive. [52] It is being phased out and replaced by affordable World Health Organization intradermal-vaccination regimens. [52] Intramuscular vaccination should be given into the deltoid, not the gluteal area, which has been associated with vaccination failure due to injection into fat rather than muscle. In children less than a year old, the lateral thigh is recommended. [72] Thoroughly washing the wound as soon as possible with soap and water for approximately five minutes is effective in reducing the number of viral particles. [73] Povidone-iodine or alcohol is then recommended to reduce the virus further. [74] Awakening to find a bat in the room, or finding a bat in the room of a previously unattended child or mentally disabled or intoxicated person, is an indication for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP. The recommendation for the precautionary use of PEP in bat encounters where no contact is recognized has been questioned in the medical literature, based on a cost–benefit analysis. [75] However, a 2002 study has supported the protocol of precautionary administering of PEP where a child or mentally compromised individual has been alone with a bat, especially in sleep areas, where a bite or exposure may occur with the victim being unaware. [76] After onset A treatment known as the Milwaukee protocol, which involves putting a person into a chemically induced coma and using antiviral medications, has been proposed but subsequently found not to be useful. [77] It initially came into use in 2003, following Jeanna Giese, a teenager from Wisconsin, becoming the first person known to have survived rabies without preventive treatments before symptom onset. [78] 79] She, however, already had antibodies against rabies when she initially arrived at hospital. [77] While this treatment has been tried multiple times more, there have been no further cases of survival. [77] The protocol has since been assessed as an ineffective treatment with concerns related to the costs and ethics of its use. [77] 80] Prognosis Vaccination after exposure, PEP, is highly successful in preventing the disease PEP against rabies. [67] In unvaccinated humans, rabies is almost always fatal after neurological symptoms have developed. [81] Epidemiology Deaths from rabies per million persons in 2012    0    1    2–4    5–9    10–17    18–69 Map of rabies-free countries and territories In 2010, an estimated 26, 000 people died from rabies, down from 54, 000 in 1990. [82] The majority of the deaths occurred in Asia and Africa. [81] As of 2015, India, followed by China (approximately 6, 000) and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (5, 600) had the most cases. [83] A 2015 collaboration between the World Health Organization, World Organization of Animal Health (OIE) Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation (FAO) and Global Alliance for Rabies Control has a goal of eliminating deaths from rabies by 2030. [84] India India has the highest rate of human rabies in the world, primarily because of stray dogs, 85] whose number has greatly increased since a 2001 law forbade the killing of dogs. [86] Effective control and treatment of rabies in India is hindered by a form of mass hysteria known as puppy pregnancy syndrome (PPS. Dog bite victims with PPS, male as well as female, become convinced that puppies are growing inside them, and often seek help from faith healers rather than medical services. [87] An estimated 20, 000 people die every year from rabies in India, more than a third of the global total. [86] Australia The rabies virus survives in widespread, varied, rural animal reservoirs. Despite Australia's official rabies-free status, 88] Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV) discovered in 1996, is a strain of rabies prevalent in native bat populations. There have been three human cases of ABLV in Australia, all of them fatal. United States Rabies cases in humans and domestic animals — United States, 1938–2018 From 1960 to 2018, a total of 125 human rabies cases were reported in the United States; 36 (28% were attributed to dog bites during international travel. [89] Among the 89 infections acquired in the United States, 62 (70% were attributed to bats. [89] While canine-specific rabies does not circulate among dogs, about a hundred dogs become infected from other wildlife per year in the US. [90] 91] Rabies is common among wild animals in the United States. Bats, raccoons, skunks and foxes account for almost all reported cases (98% in 2009. Rabid bats are found in all 48 contiguous states. Other reservoirs are more limited geographically; for example, the raccoon rabies virus variant is only found in a relatively narrow band along the East Coast. Due to a high public awareness of the virus, efforts at vaccination of domestic animals and curtailment of feral populations, and availability of postexposure prophylaxis, incidence of rabies in humans is very rare. A total of 49 cases of the disease was reported in the country between 1995 and 2011; of these, 11 are thought to have been acquired abroad. Almost all domestically acquired cases are attributed to bat bites. [92] Europe Either no or very few cases of rabies are reported each year in Europe; cases are contracted both during travel and in Europe. [93] In Switzerland the disease was virtually eliminated after scientists placed chicken heads laced with live attenuated vaccine in the Swiss Alps. [65] The foxes of Switzerland, proven to be the main source of rabies in the country, ate the chicken heads and immunized themselves. [65] 94] Italy, after being declared rabies-free from 1997 to 2008, has witnessed a reemergence of the disease in wild animals in the Triveneto regions ( Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia) due to the spreading of an epidemic in the Balkans that also affected Austria. An extensive wild animal vaccination campaign eliminated the virus from Italy again, and it regained the rabies-free country status in 2013, the last reported case of rabies being reported in a red fox in early 2011. [95] 96] Great Britain has been free of rabies since the beginning of the twentieth century except for a rabies-like virus in a few Daubenton's bats; there has been one, fatal, case of transmission to a human. There have been four deaths from rabies, transmitted abroad by dog bite, since 2000. The last infection in the UK occurred in 1922, and the last death from indigenous rabies was in 1902. [97] 98] Unlike the other countries of Europe it is protected by being an island, and by strict quarantine procedures. Mexico Mexico was certified by the World Health Organization as free of dog-transmitted rabies in 2019, since no case of dog-human transmission has been recorded in two years. [99] History Rabies has been known since around 2000 BC. [100] The first written record of rabies is in the Mesopotamian Codex of Eshnunna (circa 1930 BC) which dictates that the owner of a dog showing symptoms of rabies should take preventive measure against bites. If another person were bitten by a rabid dog and later died, the owner was heavily fined. [101] Ineffective folk remedies abounded in the medical literature of the ancient world. The physician Scribonius Largus prescribed a poultice of cloth and hyena skin; Antaeus recommended a preparation made from the skull of a hanged man. [102] Rabies appears to have originated in the Old World, the first epizootic in the New World occurring in Boston in 1768. [103] It spread from there, over the next few years, to various other states, as well as to the French West Indies, eventually becoming common all across North America. Rabies was considered a scourge for its prevalence in the 19th century. In France and Belgium, where Saint Hubert was venerated, the " St Hubert's Key " was heated and applied to cauterize the wound. By an application of magical thinking, dogs were branded with the key in hopes of protecting them from rabies. The fear of rabies was almost irrational, due to the number of vectors (mostly rabid dogs) and the absence of any efficacious treatment. It was not uncommon for a person bitten by a dog merely suspected of being rabid to commit suicide or to be killed by others. [104] In ancient times the attachment of the tongue (the lingual frenulum, a mucous membrane) was cut and removed as this was where rabies was thought to originate. This practice ceased with the discovery of the actual cause of rabies. [25] Louis Pasteur's 1885 nerve tissue vaccine was successful, and was progressively improved to reduce often severe side-effects. [15] In modern times, the fear of rabies has not diminished, and the disease and its symptoms, particularly agitation, have served as an inspiration for several works of zombie or similarly-themed fiction, often portraying rabies as having mutated into a stronger virus which fills humans with murderous rage or incurable illness, bringing about a devastating, widespread pandemic. [105] Etymology The term is derived from the Latin rabies, madness. 106] This, in turn, may be related to the Sanskrit rabhas, to rage. 107] The Greeks derived the word lyssa, from lud or "violent" this root is used in the genus name of the rabies virus, Lyssavirus. [104] Other animals Rabies is infectious to mammals; three stages of central nervous system infection are recognized. The first stage is a one- to three-day period characterized by behavioral changes and is known as the prodromal stage. The second is the excitative stage, which lasts three to four days. This stage is often known as "furious rabies" for the tendency of the affected animal to be hyper-reactive to external stimuli and bite at anything near. The third is the paralytic stage and is caused by damage to motor neurons. Incoordination is seen, owing to rear limb paralysis, and drooling and difficulty swallowing is caused by paralysis of facial and throat muscles. Death is usually caused by respiratory arrest. [108] Research The outer shell of the rabies virus, stripped of its RNA contents and thus unable to cause disease, may be used as a vector for the delivery of unrelated genetic material in a research setting. It has the advantage over other pseudotyping methods for gene delivery that the cell targeting ( tissue tropism) is more specific for the central nervous system, a difficult-to-reach site, obviating the need for invasive delivery methods. It is also capable of infecting neighboring "upstream" cells, moving from one cell to axons of the next at synapses, and is thus used for retrograde tracing in neuronal circuits. The Crystal, the Crystal Calls. Wscieklosc download full moon. Rabid: A remake of the Cronenberg horror film. If anything this one is even more gruesome. When Rose (Laura Vandervoort) is horribly disfigured in a road accident we see every detail when the bandages come off. Rose goes for experimental stem cell treatment at an Institute run by Dr Burroughs (Ted Atherton) which has unexpected results. Rose develops a craving for blood and has strange nightmares about attacking and biting people. Burroughs is more of a Dr Moreau than a Dr Frankenstein and has a sinister agenda.
While Rose is vampiric her victims act like zombies, devouring the victims they don't just infect. Soon the city is being overrun by a plague of rabid biters. Funny scenes of a rabid Santa on the loose in a hospital and an arrogant womaniser encountering Rose. There is also a pretty good satire on the fashion industry and the facile nature of beauty and celebrity. Gory Horror/Comedy/Satire directed and written by Jen and Sylvia Soska. 8/10.

Ahhhhh. Simon Abrams December 13, 2019 “Rabid” definitely feels like a remake of a 1977 horror cheapy directed by a young David Cronenberg. Co-writer/director team Jen and Sylvia Soska, with the help of co-writer John Serge, have only superficially updated Cronenbergs “Rabid, ” a B-movie about the dehumanizing effects of a vampire-like epidemic. The Soskas revamped “Rabid” is still worth seeing because they have a wickedly funny sense of humor, and a few winningly nasty ideas about how their obsessive characters would only grow more selfish during a crisis. But: the best parts of “Rabid” are often overshadowed by tired jokes about the cut-throat fashion industry (the movies heroine is a wannabe clothing designer) and the predatory nature of self-styled artists. There are a lot of promising ideas here, but none are developed so much that this remake feels essential. Advertisement “Rabid” begins with the first of a few endearing, but forgettable tributes to Cronenbergs movies: a motorcycle almost spins out of control, like it does at the beginning of the original 1977 “Rabid. ” The motorcycle is driven by Rose ( Laura Vandervoort) a scarred fashion designer whos initially defined by how defensive she feels at work (ex: shes a vegetarian, eek. Rose feels singled out by her blowhard boss Gunter ( Mackenzie Gray) a stereotypically oily Euro-trash aesthete who would fit right into “ Zoolander. ” Rose is also mocked by her peers, like Bev and Ellie (the Soskas) who pick on the blemish covering Roses forehead (“ Scarface ”) whenever theyre not snorting cocaine or physically bumping Rose out of the way in their haste to enter a popular Canadian night club. “Rabid” isnt a period piece, though it sometimes feels like one. Soon enough, Rose inadvertently succeeds at getting into a motorcycle accident, leaving her horribly maimed; her jaw is wired shut, and some of her intestines have been ripped out. Roses recovery is sped up considerably by aspiring model and BFF Chelsea ( Hanneke Talbot) as well as some radical reconstructive surgery from Dr. William Burroughs ( Ted Atherton. But, while Rose is now turning heads—including Gunter, who gives her a rare opportunity to develop her clothing designs for his “Schadenfreude” collection—shes also ripping out the jugulars of insecure alpha predators like night-club brute Billy (CM Punk) or narcissist soap opera star Dominic ( Stephen Huszar. Because Rose, like Chamberss character in the original “Rabid, ” has contracted a weird strain of vampire-like bloodlust, an association thats spelled out in the scene where Dr. Burroughs listens to the other William Burroughs read a passage about vampires in his spoken-word piece, “Advice for Young People. ” That allusion is a bit too blunt to be clever, but it is kind of charming as a side-long tribute to Cronenbergs own “ Naked Lunch ” adaptation. Less thrilling: heavy-handed dialogue thats neither provocative nor cruel enough to be effective as sandwich-board speechifying. Gunters dialogue is especially bad, though Gray puts an appropriately loopy, Udo Kier-esque spin on lines like, I do not mean to die for fashion, but this fashion is to die for, mmm. ” Other declarative statements are not as easily salvaged, like when Rose tells hunky, pure-hearted photographer love interest Brad Hart ( Benjamin Hollingsworth) that “I just love the way that the clothes make me feel. You can literally be anybody, become any thing. It's like armor: when you walk out the door, you're arming yourself. His response—“For me, true beauty lies in the things we have yet to uncover”—wouldnt be so unfortunate if the Soskas viciously laid into him more later on (or her, for that matter. There are a number of dark, and grimly funny ideas in the Soskas “Rabid, ” but their vision isnt strong enough to tie them all together. Rose and Beverlys relationship is especially under-developed, which robs a climactic moment of its slam-the-brakes power. The movies irruptive sense of gross-out humor also never really seems fitting given the goofy targets of the Soskas derision. One minute the characters are struggling to explain—at length—how theyre feeling, and then the next minute, theres a monstrous appendage coming out of Roses head (weirdly reminiscent of a certain infamous Jamaa Fanaka movie. I wanted more where that came from, or maybe a more thoughtful gutting of the hand-me-down tropes that Cronenberg previously attacked. But the Soskas signature fascination with transhumanism and body modification doesnt travel very far here (then again, it doesnt go far in Cronenbergs “Rabid, ” either. The Soskas are, however, smart to play up the melodramatic elements of Roses story, so that shes more like Carrie White (Cronenberg originally hoped to cast Sissy Spacek because of her performance in “Carrie”) just as they consummately play up Dr. Burroughss Frankensteinian ambition as a riff on the blinding hubris that motivates Oliver Reed s Hal Raglan in Cronenbergs “ The Brood. ” But, while “Rabid” is a faithful homage, it doesnt hang together the way it should. January 31, 2019 Local health officials are warning residents and visitors to avoid contact with wild and stray animals after a rabid raccoon attacked someone in Escambia County. The Florida Department of Health in Escambia County health specialists collected tissue samples from the raccoon and have forwarded the samples to the state laboratory, which has confirmed the presence of the rabies virus. Officials did not release the location in the county of the incident. Rabies is a viral disease that infects the central nervous system. Without proper treatment, rabies can cause brain infection and death. Rabies is transmitted by a rabid animal by a bite, a scratch, or by contact with mucous membranes such as the eyes, nose, or mouth. A series of “rabies shots” can protect a bite victim from developing the rabies infection, if given soon after the bite occurs. “Rabies is a fatal infection but is preventable, ” notes FDOH-Escambias director, Dr. John J. Lanza. “It is important to not feed or pet wild and stray animals, to avoid animals that appear to be acting strangely, and to keep pets vaccinated against rabies. Persons who are bitten by a wild animal or an animal who has not been vaccinated against rabies should seek immediate medical care. Proper medical treatment of an animal bite can be life-saving. ” In Florida, raccoons, foxes, bats, and cats are the animals most frequently diagnosed with rabies. Other animals that are at high risk for rabies include dogs, bobcats, skunks, and otters. Because of their proximity to people, stray and unvaccinated cats and dogs pose a special risk. Individuals cannot always tell if an animal has rabies by looking at it. To guard against rabies, the health department recommends residents follow these steps: Teach your children not to go near wild and stray animals, and never keep them as pets. Vaccinate your dog, cat, ferret, or horse to protect against rabies. Keep vaccinations up-to-date. Do not feed your pets outside. The food may attract wild animals. Make sure your garbage is securely covered. Open garbage attracts wild and stray animals. Spay or neuter your pet to reduce its tendency to roam or fight. Do not let your pets roam freely or allow them to interact with wild or stray animals. Keep them in a fenced yard or on a leash at all times. Prevent bats from entering living quarters or occupied spaces in homes, churches, schools, and other similar areas, where they might come into contact with people and pets. Call Escambia County Animal Control, at 850-595-0097, to remove stray dogs and cats from your neighborhood. If your pet is bitten by another animal, immediately seek veterinary assistance for your pet and contact Escambia County Animal Control. If you are bitten by a wild animal, or by any animal that is acting strangely, seek medical care as soon as possible so that a physician can evaluate your risk of rabies infection and administer the rabies vaccine, if appropriate. DOH-Escambias Environmental Health division investigates animal bite reports, tests animals for rabies through the state laboratory, and orders animal quarantine as necessary. For more information, or to report an animal bite, contact the FDOH-Escambia Environmental Health office at  (850) 595-6700 or visit. File photo. Written by William Filed Under News.

December 13, 2019 12:36PM PT The Soska Sisters' remake of the 1977 David Cronenberg film is a muddled mix of satire and gore-horror. The most uneven of David Cronenberg s early commercial horror features, the 1977 “ Rabid, ” was nonetheless probably the biggest success among them, in large part due to the novelty value of seeing “Behind the Green Door” porn superstar and erstwhile Ivory Snow detergent-box model Marilyn Chambers in a lurid mainstream vehicle. Its also the one ripest for remake, if only because his just-prior “Shivers” aka “They Came from Within” and ensuing “The Brood” should be left alone — largely reviled upon release, theyre now rightly considered genre classics. Lacking their outrageous ideas and cumulative narrative momentum despite some striking elements, “ Rabid ” nonetheless has a strong-enough basic concept to warrant revisiting. In theory, “twisted twins” Jen and Sylvia Soska are fair candidates for that job: Like Cronenberg, theyre Canadian, attracted to body-horror, and have cut their own path from micro-budget projects toward the mainstream. They also claim they dislike remakes as a rule, but “couldnt bear the thought of Cronenbergs work being re-imagined by someone who doesnt both love and understand the original material. ” Those sentiments are more than a little belied by their “Rabid, ” however, which not only has little to do with its predecessor, but doesnt feel satisfying or fully realized on its own terms. It opens Dec. 13 on 10 U. S. screens, simultaneous with on-demand release. The Canadian siblings stirred interest among horror fans with 2012s “American Mary. ” That surgical-horror tale was a mixed bag, but interesting—certainly more so than their uninspired WWE-produced features since, rote sequel “See No Evil 2” and Dean Cain actioner “Vendetta, ” neither of which they wrote. “Rabid” is a return to more personal terrain, yet often it seems not so much a revamp of the designated title as a rehash of “Marys” themes and aesthetic. Paying lip service to the Cronenberg film while mostly going their own way, albeit less successfully than before, this film by the Soska Sisters (as they prefer to be billed) never gels into a cohesive whole. The classic bespectacled screen wallflower bullied by less-pretty mean girls, Rose (Laura Vandervoort from werewolf series “Bitten”) aspires to be a fashion designer. Still, shes little more than a glorified seamstress at House of Gunter, a backstabbing couturier whose eponymous chief (Mackenzie Gray) is a caricature of Eurotrash bitchy-queendom. When Rose is asked to a party by in-house photographer Brad (Benjamin Hollingsworth) shes flattered — then humiliated, upon discovering it was a “charity” date orchestrated by her adoptive sister and only friend, Chelsea (Hanneke Talbot. Our heroine rushes distraught into the street, where she and her scooter are promptly creamed by a passing van. As if her self-esteem werent already low enough, Rose is now grotesquely damaged in face and body. Thus shes willing to offer herself up as a guinea pig for the “experimental research” of the Burroughs Institute, whose presiding scientist (Ted Atherton) promises miraculous results through “stem cell manipulation. ” Indeed, overnight Rose is not just healed, but radiant, with no further need for glasses, and seemingly organic improvements in makeup and hair styling. There are, however, ominous stomach rumblings portending of side-effects Dr. Burroughs very much undersells. They soon drive the now-stunning former vegetarian towards murderous “meat craving” fits he convinces her were just nightmares in the fuzzy morning-after. Some of her hunky victims survive and run carnivorously amok themselves, leading to citywide panic over this mysterious “epidemic. ” The 1977 film gradually drifted away from Chambers heroine toward depicting mass hysteria, a narrative shift that wasnt entirely successful. But it still worked considerably better than the Soskas version, which reinforces that they have little feel for building suspense, and none at all for staging action. Starting with Roses accident, several key pieces of physical business inexplicably take place offscreen, and the originals most memorable set piece (an attack on a subway train) is just mentioned as something that happens to Chelsea. Other bits that offer vivid potential, like an afflicted mans invasion of a busy cafe, or another in a Santa suit raging into a hospital corridor, are thrown away via inert camerawork and editing. What the Soskas do favor is gore, as well as a semi-camp, semi-satirical sensibility that manifests itself primarily in cartoonish subsidiary characters and garishly colorful visual elements. That tenor worked well for the surgical-body-modification theme of “American Mary, ” but it feels trite when aimed at a target as obvious as the fashion world. Written with John Serge, the co-directors screenplay is more broad than witty, with Gunters new collection called “Schadenfreude” — as if we didnt already get that hes a vindictive creep — and other half-baked ideas. For a while the movie seems to be turning into “Ms. 45, ” with ravenous Rose targeting sexist louts. Then it strays into zombie territory, before finally turning into a muddled, over-the-top mutant creature feature. Add in a surreal dream sequence thats like a music video, plus pretentious dialogue with a pro-vegan tilt, and “Rabid” begins to feel like a movie from which no stray concept was discarded, but the connective tissue got left out. The result is superficially slick and diverting, not to mention icky in a way that will appeal to some horror aficionados. Yet the critique of female objectification and conformity the Soskas gesture toward is undermined by their own penchant for vaguely Goth, glam dress-up. The film feels more like a horror costume party than a commentary, while lacking the basic tension, excitement, and narrative drive to function as a thriller. The performers do their best coping with the varying demands for naturalism here. Vandervoort at times comes close to making Rose a three-dimensional person, while at the opposite end of the scale, Phil Brooks aka CM Punk fares best among the more caricatured roles with a funny one-scene turn. But overlong, undercooked “Rabid” cant settle on a unified tone for its actors, let alone its narrative. Even its misanthropy ultimately feels indecisive and trifling. Humans gone feral should terrify us, but this movies snide attitude ultimately places its threats more in the realm of cartoonist Lynda Barrys famous “Poodle With a Mohawk. ” Fear of the spread of the coronavirus that is sweeping China has begun to contaminate the film industry in South Korea. Box office between Friday and Sunday dropped by 70% compared to last weeks 4-day holiday weekend and by 30% compared with the weekend before that. Though the virus may only be partly responsible. “We. Rabid Bites and Scratches-Your Basic Travel Kit Rabies is a viral infectio that is transmitted by the saliva of an infected animal, usually stray dogs and cats. Litle kittens popping their heads over the tops of cardboard boxes may look very sweet in the market but don't even think about touching them or going near. Licks on a small cut or open wound and licks on the mouth, nose or lips can also transmit the virus, so do make sure your children  are well aware ofthe dangers. Wash thoroughly as outlined for animal bites, then apply thyme and the strongest alcohol you have. Get to the hospital as soon as possible. FISH Poisonous fish and marine animals carry their venom mainly in their tentacles and spines. These ca be extremely painful to extract and the risk of infection is always a problem, espically in the polluted waters. Any visible spines should be removed and the area bathed in salt water, then apply neat thyme. For stings, wash the area in cold water and apply neat chamomile immediately. PORTUGUESE MAN-OF-WAR The stings are extremely painful and cause shock, cramp and vomiting. Remove any of the remaining tentacles and wash the area with whatever water you have. Then apply neat lavender all over the area and as the tissues absorb it, apply some more. When you get home wash the area with soap and water and apply chamomile, and continue applying lavender and chamomile every three hours for twenty-four hours. Keep the person warm and in bed or rested. Give plenty of warm liquids and Rescue Remedy(a homeopathic preparation that is widely available. Massage the whole body with the following oil once a day. Eucalyptus 10 Drops Peppermint 2 Drops Geranium Dilute in 30 ml vegetable oil JELLY FISH The small common jelly fish can give a slight sting with a reddening effect. Wash the area thoroughly as soon as you can with soap and water and apply 1 drop of chamomile or lavender oil and then ice. SEA URCHINS If you happen to be unlucky enough to tread on a sea urchin the most important thing is to get all the spikes out. As these are extremely brittle and break easily, do be careful about it - and make sure that whatever you use to dig them out is sterilised first. After removing all the spikes and washing the area thoroughly apply 1 drop of neat thyme every three hours, for twelve hours. If the spikes prove difficult to get out buy a Paw Paw fruit, use the inside of the skin as a poultice. The enzymes in the fruit help to dissolve the traces of spike left in the skin and also soothe the area. The pain can be treated by using equal parts of these oils. Chamomile Lavender Diluted in 30mls Vegetable oil. Alternatively, use 2 drops of each - a total of 6 drops  - to a teaspoon of oil. STING RAYS Treat the sting as for sea urchins but apply lavender oil immediately, in addition to the thyme. The pain can be intense and last up to forty-eight hours. BEES Bee stings are painful and may cause fever and headaches; an allergic reaction can further cause swelling, redness and rash. Try to remove the sting and apply a cold compress of chamomile to the area. Leave it for several hours if possible but if the sting is in an awkward place just hold the compress to it for as long as possible. In both cases, apply 1 drop of neat chamomile three times a day for two days. WASPS Being alkaline, it helps if wasp stings are treated with cider or wine vinegar: into 1 teaspoon put 2 drops each of lavender and chamomile essential oil, mix well and dab on to the bitten area three times a day. SPIDERS Dilute three drops of lavender and 2 drops of chamomile essential oil in a teaspoon of alcohol. Blend well together and apply to the area three times-over one day should suffice. THE BLACK WIDOW Lavender oil is reputed to neutralise the poison of this very nasty spider. Apply 10 neat drops to the area every two or three minutes until you get to the hospital. TICKS you will only notice the tick by its swollen body attached to your not pull it out. A cigarette placed on its body will make the tick drop off, or1 drop of thyme will also do the trick. Then apply 1 drop of neat lavender every five minutes, to a totasl of ten, to avoid infection and reduce pain and swelling. HORNET BITES Follow the treatment recommended for bee stings, or use lavender neat three times a day. GNATS AND MIDGES Dilute three drops of thyme in 1 teaspoon of cider vinegar or lemon juice and apply to the bites. This will stop the irration. s an alternative, dab on neat lavender. BED BUGS AND FLEAS The imoirtant factor top avoid here is the risk of infection. Bathe the bitten area aand apply neat lavender. Alternatively, dilute 3 drops of thyme in cider vinegar and apply over the bitten area. Eucalyptus is another option - use as you would lavender. CHIGGERS AND JIGGERS These are burrowing insects which attack mainly through the feet. They lay their eggs in burrows under the skin and also spread infection. If red lines appear up the leg or there is swelling in the lymph glands see a doctor. Add 10 drops of thyme to a teaspoon of any alcohol and apply it to the area every three hours. The next day and thereafter apply neat lavender three times a day. SANDFLIES Sandflies can cause phebotomus fever which usually last about three days after the bite. Apply neat lavender as soon as possible after the bite and to prevent fever massage the whole of the body twice a day for a week. Thyme Diluted in 30ml vegetable oil If you cannot get a container for this quantity quickly, use 3 drops of each oil in a dessertspoon of vegetable oil. The parasite carried by sand flies is responsible for this and for orential sore (oe Leishmaniasis) which can cause long term-ulceration of the nose and mouth with chronic illness, fevers and leisons that look like leprosy. Avoid all areas where sandflies are breeding and wear protective creams and oils wherever they are to be found. MOSQUITOES The area you are visiting determines the severity of a mosquito bite. Malaria is carried by the Anopheles mosquito which now lives in over one hundred countries and is emigrating to more while at the same time becoming resistant to the usual medications. Dengue fever is a viral infection carried by another type of mosquito. It stands to reason that as several serious viral and bacterial diseases are transmitted by mosquitoes, other as yet unidentified transmissions may be taking place. As you can never know who that mosquito diving around your room, bit, before he  started taking a swipe at you, it is only sensible to take all precautions possible to avoid gettng bitten yourself. And when you put on your protective oil don't forget your face - it might be life- saving as well as face-saving! If you have already been bitten use neat lavender oil on the bite. If you've been bitten over a large area take 1 cup of cider vinegar or the juice of two lemons and add to it 10 drops of lavender and 5 of thyme. Put the mixture in a bath,  swishing the water around before you get in. Afterwards, apply neat lavender oil to all the bites. Each night rub your body with the oil formula given for sandflies above, adding 5 drops of lemongrass to the mix. SNAKES Lavender has long been effectively used against the venom produced by adders in the mountainous regions of Europe, and it is about the best essential oil to use from the travel kit until you can get help. You will want to identify the snake but do not be tempted to touch it or take any gambles in an attempt to kill it. Few people going on holiday will have read up on the local snakes, although if you have been bitten  you will wish you had. If the skin has two distinct puncture marks the odds are that it is poisonous, but if you can see small rows of teeth-marks and the skin is not punctured then you are probably lucky. In any case get help quickly. Wash the bitten part with whatever liquid you have available  - water, alcohol, Coke or essential oil if that's the only liquid you can find, anything to try and remove the poison by washing. But do not move the bitten part as this might disperse the venom. apply lavender essential oil - as much and as often as you want to - this is an emergency. Tie a bandage around leg or arm to slow down the circulation. PLANTS Plants contain many irritants in species such as stinging nettles, poison ivy and so forth. These can cause uriticaria  - white blotch areas on the skin with raised wheals of flesh. Intense itching is also another problem. Apply soap and water as soon as possible to wash the area and then apply eucalyptus, lavender, or chamomile, either neat or on a compress. A cold compress with 2 drops of one of these essential oils often stops the irritation within a few hours. Reference: The Fragrant Pharmacy: Valerie Anne Worwood.

I'm not the biggest fan of remakes or reimaginings but i wanted to watch a movie in the evening and i thought let's give Rabid a chance, since it's based on the work of Cronenberg. I thought it was really well made for the first 45 minutes, i thought it was going to be an arthouse movie since they focused so much on the main character (and her struggle) who suffers from facial deformity which was caused by an accident. And then came the moment where they came up with a great scene which definitely pays tribute to Cronenberg's Dead Ringers, which is one of my favorite scenes from Rabid. After that the movie slowly turns into mediocrity, i love horror but i didn't expected that they would ruin the second half of the movie by turning it into a zombie movie. A real turn off if you ask me, any work of Cronenberg doesn't deserve to be treated like this. There were a few interesting points towards the end but it doesn't save the movie as a whole, what a shame.

She recovers to find herself looking as beautiful as the models she works with. Sarah finds her confidence and sexual appetite is also increased leading to several torrid sexual encounters. Unbeknownst to her, Sarah sets off a spiraling contagion, as within 24 hours her lovers become rabid, violent spreaders of death and disease. As the disease mutates, it spreads through society at an accelerated rate causing an ever-increasing number of people to rampage through the streets in a violent and bloody killing spree. It took no small amount of guts for Jen and Sylvia Soska to remake a David Cronenberg film, the first such effort ever attempted, even if the master horror director's 1977 Rabid isn't one of his best. The identical twin filmmakers, who are credited under the moniker "The Soska Sisters. would seem well suited for the task, based on their distinctive oeuvre which includes such grindhouse movies as American Mary, Dead Hooker in a Trunk and See No Evil 2. Unfortunately, their reimagining of Cronenberg's film, although it has some imaginative touches, can most generously be described as an affectionate homage. In the role that marked porn star Marilyn Chambers' legit feature debut, Laura Vandervoort ( Smallville, Jigsaw) plays Rose, an aspiring fashion designer struggling to earn the respect of her boss Gunter (Mackenzie Gray, so over the top that he makes Sacha Baron Cohen's Brüno seem subtle by comparison. A wallflower bearing a small facial scar from a long-ago car accident, Rose reluctantly lets her friend Chelsea (Hanneke Talbot, Ready or Not) set up her up on a date with a fellow co-worker. After overhearing a pair of fellow partygoers (amusingly played by the Soska sisters themselves) laughingly describing her as "weird and sad. Rose flees the premises, only to get run down by a motorcycle. The resulting horrific facial and body disfigurement is explained to her by a doctor (a goateed Stephen McHattie, appropriately creepy) who advises, I would strongly suggest staying away from mirrors right now" and assures her that her severe intestinal damage won't be a problem. "You'll be able to live a perfectly normal life with a shortened organ. he says, unconvincingly. Lacking medical insurance (the pic adds some mild social commentary, about both the fashion and the medical industries, into its occasionally satirical mix) Rose eagerly takes up the offer of the mysterious Dr. Burroughs (Ted Atherton) who promises to restore her looks and health with an operation involving "stem cell manipulation. That the doctor is not quite to be trusted becomes evident by his habit of listening to recordings of his namesake, author William Burroughs, and the blood-red robes worn by him and his nurses in the operating room. Nonetheless, the operation is a success, to the degree that Rose emerges from it seemingly healthy and a stunning beauty as well. Unfortunately for her, some complications arise, notably dreamlike episodes, in which she displays extreme sexual aggressiveness and a literal bloodthirstiness, that she eventually discovers, to her horror, are real. Her victims, apparently infected with a rabies-like disease, are soon transformed into zombie-like maniacs with a taste for blood themselves. This remake follows the essential template of Cronenberg's, adding sly homages to some of his other movies as well. But although Vandervoort, who delivers an appealing, sympathetic performance, is a marked improvement over the wooden Chambers, this version falls short of the original on nearly every other level. Ploddingly paced (it runs nearly 20 minutes longer than the 1977 film, to detrimental effect) poorly scripted and featuring largely amateurish performances and cheesy special effects, this Rabid strives to emulate the striking body horror of the original but mainly comes across like a half-baked imitation. To their credit, the Soskas attempt to get ahead of such criticism, with one character asking, Why do we keep remaking old trends. Unfortunately for them, it turns out that being in on the joke doesn't really make it any funnier.
